Later, when he acquired sufficient funds, he obtained passage for his sister, Mary. Anton married Anna on February 21, 1898 at St. Wenceslaus Church near Clutier, Iowa. He became a citizen of the United States on October 18, 1898. They first lived on a farm in Carroll Township, until March 2, 1911, when he purchased a farm in Howard Township, Tama County. Here they settled and raised a family of eight children. Anton Kucera, 57, Dies; Buried at St. Vaclav Popular Howard Township Farmer Victim of Septicemia, Rheumatic Infection Affecting Heart Death at 9:30 o clock Friday night, at St. Thomas hospital in Marshalltown claimed Anton Kucera, 57, a well-known farmer living seven miles northeast of Toledo, who succumbed to general septicemia due to a rheumatic infection that affected the heart. A blood transfusion given the patient a few days ago afforded only temporary relief, and the end came quite suddenly. Mr. Kucera had been in the hospital since March 26. Mr. Kucera was a native of Bohemia, but had lived in this country since he was a young man. He and his sister, Mrs. James Hala, living seven miles northeast of Toledo, were the only members of his family to come to America. The parents, both deceased, never lived in this country. Mr. Kucera s wife, who survives with eight children, was Anna Zmolek before her marriage. Members of the large Zmolek family have long been prominent citizens of Tama county. The Kucera children are: Philip, on one of the Kucera farms near Toledo; Mrs. Emil Hlas, on the Anton Chizek farm northeast of Toledo; Anton, Joseph, Frank, Frances, Genevieve and Mary, all living at home. Mr. Kucera was a thrifty farmer, and a good manager. Coming to Tama county from the old country practically penniless, he was the owner of two farms in the Toledo neighborhood at the time of his death. He was a charter member of St. Joseph s lodge, Z.C.B.J., now known as the K.D. lodge, or Order of Catholic Workmen, organized nearly thirty years ago, soon after the establishment of St. Vaclav church, of which he was also a member. Mr. Kucera had a legion of friends. His popularity was attested by the enormous crowd which attended his funeral Monday. A short service was conducted at the home at 9 a.m., and the public service was at St. Vaclav church at 10:30, conducted by the Rev. Father Thomas Vopatek, of Clutier. The church was filled to capacity, and many were outside during the service, unable to gain admission. The friends living on or near surfaced roads came in cars, and those on bad roads came in wagons or buggies, or walked. Burial was in St. Vaclav cemetery.
