Description	:	Our father and grandfather, Tony Nikkel, son of John D. and Helena Loewen Nikkel, was born November 1, 1905, at Hillsboro, Kansas. He passed away on May 19, 2006, at the Moundridge Manor, Moundridge, Kansas. He reached the age of 100 years and 6 months. He grew to manhood in the Hillsboro community where he also attended the Hope Valley School. He loved and embraced this faith unto his... Read More	Our father and grandfather, Tony Nikkel, son of John D. and Helena Loewen Nikkel, was born November 1, 1905, at Hillsboro, Kansas. He passed away on May 19, 2006, at the Moundridge Manor, Moundridge, Kansas. He reached the age of 100 years and 6 months. He grew to manhood in the Hillsboro community where he also attended the Hope Valley School. While in his teenage years, he answered God's call to salvation and upon the confession of his faith was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite on March 15, 1923. He loved and embraced this faith unto his death. On March 31, 1929, he was joined in marriage to Justine Ensz at Inman, Kansas. They established their first home in the Hillsboro community. Then, in 1934, they moved to a farm several miles north of Inman. Here they raised their family of three sons and two daughters. Dad was an industrious man and was on that enjoyed life. He farmed and did custom work in the community. But his real interest was in repair work as a mechanic and electrician. He served the community for many years as a telephone lineman. Dad loved people and their warm hospitality was shared with many friends and relatives. He was a man of courage and had a way of always looking on the positive side. Being on time was important to him. He served the congregation for over twenty years as an usher. The folks moved off the farm in 1965, and a new door to serve opened for them. Between 1966 and 1973, they spent a number of these years at Christian Public Service units as house parents in Gallup, New Mexico, Window Rock, Arizona, Rockport, and Gulfport, Mississippi. This was a rewarding and enriching experience and many new and lasting friendships were formed. After sharing life together for over 55 years, our mother passed away in September of 1984. Dad missed his dear companion very much, but he kept in touch with family and friends by writing many letters and sending many faxes. Many lonely hours were passed by putting puzzles together. He enjoyed good health in life, but as he was getting older, he entered Moundridge Manor in 1992. Here he was always thankful for all that was done for him. As a family, we are especially grateful for the wonderful care given to our father by the Manor staff. During the last several years we noticed he often expressed a longing for heaven. And, he especially cherished the glimpses or visions of heaven that were granted him. We are comforted with the assurance that he has gone to his eternal rest. Those left to cherish fond memories are: two sons, Delton and Deloris of Inman, Kansas and Ray and Jane of Pincher Creek, Alberta, Canada; two daughters, Lois and Melvin Wohlgemuth of Swanson, Saskatchewan, Canada, and Norma and Ken Reimer of Linden, Alberta, Canada; one daughter-in-law, Ida Nikkel of Dalhart, Texas; twenty-five grandchildren; seventy-five great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Justina Nikkel of Moundridge, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Preceding him in death are his wife, son Floyd, five great-grandchildren, seven brothers, and nine sisters. A funeral service was held on May 22, 2006, at the Zion Mennonite Church, Inman, Kansas, officiated by Min. Gregg Johnson, Min. Charles Johnson, and Min. Maynard Koehn. Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery.
