AGNES WITTERA Bruno Resident Passed Away Friday at Advanced Age Bruno, July 1 – Funeral services were held here Monday morning for Mrs. Agnes Wittera, who passed away of heart failure in her sleep early Friday morning, June 26, at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Palik, near David City, where she had ben visiting. Her age was 85 years, 5 months and 7 days. The services were held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Vaclav Wittera of Bruno, with whom the deceased had made her home, at 9:30 o’clock, with Rev. Francis J. Kopecky celebrating the requiem mass at 10 o’clock at St. Anthony’s Catholic church and conducting the burial rites. Music was by the church choir, with her granddaughter, Mrs. James Miratsky, as organist. The pallbearers were Frank Kabourek, Ludvik Kouba, Edward Palik, Raymond Palik, Albin Kouba and Stephen Kouba, all grandsons of the deceased. Interment was in St. Anthony’s Catholic cemetery. Among those in attendance at the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Anton C. Wittera of Kearney, Mr. and Mrs. John Vitera of Schuyler, Mr. and Mrs. George Novotny of Ravenna and Mr. and Mrs. J. Vanek, James and Jerry Schmid and Mrs. Stanley Schmid of Schuyler. Agnes Schmid, daughter of Cyril and Magdalen Schmid, was born at Znaim, Moravia, in Europe, on January 19, 1857. In 1878 when she was 21 years of age, she came to the United States, arriving May 11, then coming on to David City, Nebraska. On May 20 of the same year her marriage to Vaclav Wittera was solemnized in Sts. Peter’s and Paul’s church at Abie. Mr. and Mrs. Wittera made their home on a farm 1½ miles east of Bruno, now the property of their son, Vaclav, where Mrs. Wittera spent her entire life of 64 years in the United States with the exception of the past ten months, when the infirmities of old age became manifest and she decided to pay extended visits to her three daughters near Brainard and David City. Mr. and Mrs. Wittera were the parents of eight children, of whom one daughter, Anna, died in infancy and one daughter, Matilda, Mrs. James Kobza, died on November 1, 1918. Mr. Wittera passed away July 8, 1902. The surviving children are Agnes, Mrs. Stephen Kobza, of David City; Vaclav Wittera, of Bruno; Frances, Mrs. Rudolph Palik, of David City; Anna, Mrs. Frank Kabourek, of Brainard; Anton C. Wittera, of Kearney; and Anastasia, Sister M. Juliana, of Loretto College, El Paso, Tex. Mrs. Wittera also leaves a brother, Clement Schmid of near David City; two stepsons, Frank Vitera of Cheyenne Wells, Colo., and John Vittera of Schuyler; and one step-daughter, Mrs. Mary Schmid of David City. One step-son, Joseph, of Crosby, Tex., preceded her in death. There are 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren surviving. One grandson, Rudolph Kouba, died in January of this year. A kindly, gentle, generous character, this pioneer woman was beloved by all and had a host of friends. She was a devout Catholic and a true christian. She loved flowers, and to the last day of her earthly life she walked outside to enjoy the outdoors. She was a member of the Rosary Society of St. Anthony’s parish from time of its organization and members of the society attended the services in an honorary body. ____ Card of Thanks – We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to relatives and friends for their many kindnesses at time of death of our beloved mother, also to Rev.
