Description	:	Civil War: Field & Staff, 1st Battalion, California Mountaineers Aquila Wilson Hanna was the son of James Hanna (1806-1888) and Clarissa Sidney Wilson (1809). He was educated in the public schools of Philadelphia. Aquila arrived at Eureka, California, in 1856. He was appointed Deputy County Clerk of Humboldt County in 1857, and elected County Clerk in 1859 and re-elected in 1861. Read More	Civil War: Field & Staff, 1st Battalion, California Mountaineers Aquila Wilson Hanna was the son of James Hanna (1806-1888) and Clarissa Sidney Wilson (1809). He was educated in the public schools of Philadelphia. Aquila arrived at Eureka, California, in 1856. He was appointed Deputy County Clerk of Humboldt County in 1857, and elected County Clerk in 1859 and re-elected in 1861. Aquila married Harriet "Hattie" Houghton at Bear River, Humboldt County, October 27, 1859. Aquila enlisted as a 1st Lieutentant at Fort Humboldt, California, June 19, 1863, and was commissioned as Adjutant, Field & Staff, 1st Battalion, California Mountaineers, on July 4.1863. Lieutenant Hanna was mustered out at Fort Humboldt December 31, 1864. After the war he went to San Francisco to study law and was admitted to the California Bar in 1869. Aquila practiced law in San Francisco until July 1881. He had returned to Eureka by 1885, where he was active for several years in the affairs of the California National Guard. Aquila filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at Eureka February 5, 1901, and received application No.1,262,024 and certificate No. 1,026,307. He was admitted to the Veterans Home of California at Yountville June 22, 1905 (VHC #04013). He refiled for his veteran's pension at the Veterans Home March 2, 1907. Aquila was buried in the home's cemetery. His first name was mis-spelled (two L's) on his government headstone. A replacement veteran's headstone incorrectly identifies him as a veteran of the "Indian Wars." --- A. W. HANNA DIES AT YOUNTVILLE Formerly resided in Eureka where he leaves many acquaintances. Relatives here received word yesterday of the death of A. W. Hanna at Yountville, this state, where he had resided for about ten years. Deceased formerly resided in this city where he had a wide acquaintance. The funeral was held in Yountville. Deceased was born in Philadelphia and was 79 years of age. He leaves two daughters and a son besides several brothers and sisters. Will P. Hanna of this city is a brother. He was also a brother of Mrs. Captain Kingston.
