Ruth Owens was the organist for the service and Steve Neumann was the soloist. He sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace". The congregation sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus". The eulogy was given by grandson Jon Titus and granddaughter, Megan Mahoney. A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Armstrong Chapel in Ute, Iowa. Archie Mahoney was born October 4, 1918, in David City, Nebraska, the son of Archie and Minnie (Hadenfeld) Mahoney. He was raised in Sioux City and Denison, Iowa. He attended high school and army service schools. He attained the rank of first sergeant and served with the 95th Infantry Division during World War I. He landed on Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion, participated in the Battle of the Bulge and was recognized as one of the Ironmen of Metz. He received three bronze service stars and one bronze star medal. He was self-employed in the farm seed business, owning Marten's Seed Store, until he retired in 1985. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute and served as Sunday School Superintendent 32 years. He served 10 years on the Ute City Council and 22 years as mayor of Ute. He was on the Charter Oak-Ute School Board for 16 years and served five years on the Western Hills Area Education Agency Board. He was a member of the Ute Commercial Club, American Legion Aaby Post #442, and the Iowa Seed Dealer's Association. He also served on the board of the Monona County Municipal Law Enforcement Center, the Monona County Crime Commission, the Monona County Landfill Commission and was Chairman of the Monona County Office of Emergency Planning during which the 911 emergency system was established. Mr. Mahoney was an active volunteer in senior issues and received numerous recognitions for his volunteerism, among them an outstanding volunteer award from Governor Branstad. He was a delegate to the Older Iowans Legislature for several years and served as speaker for the 1989 Older Iowans Legislature. He was active with the Senior Centers in Ute and Sioux City and was president of the volunteers group at the Sioux City Senior Center, chairman of the Area IV Agency on Aging Board, and president of the Onawa Chapter of AARP. He also was a volunteer insurance counselor with the Iowa Insurance Commission and was a member of the Older Iowans' Task Force for Senator Harkin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen (Kiepe) Mahoney, in 1981. He is survived by his children, Sandra Haas and her husband, Earl of Overland Park, Kansas; Patricia Swanson and her husband, Bob of Ames, Iowa; James Mahoney and his wife, Annette of Omaha, Nebraska; Kathy Janvrin and her husband, Todd and Maureen Mahoney, all of Overland Park, Kansas. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild and five sisters, Rachel Neumann of Omaha, Nebraska, Ina Kleckner of Denison, Iowa, Lorena Balderson of Phoenix, Arizona, Geneva Helmsing of Fairway, Kansas and Gladys Morton of Torrington, Wyoming.
