Bilger The Star Beacon Sat Jan 14, 2012, 09:00 AM EST GENEVA — Archie P. Bilger, age 86, of East Union St., Geneva, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012, at his home just as he wanted. He was born May 16, 1925, in Geneva, Ohio, the son of Frank and Bessie (Spade) Bilger and had been a lifelong Geneva resident. He graduated from Geneva High School in 1943. After graduation, he felt a need to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a radioman on the USS Whitney, AD-4, located in the Pacific Theater of Operations and was awarded multiple medals including the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, The Victory Medal, The American Area Medal, the Phil and LB Medal. The ship was decommissioned after the war in 1946. Archie always went to his ship reunions all over the United States and highly cherished spending time with his shipmates and sharing this with his family. In October 2010, he was picked by Honor Flight to be taken to Washington D.C. to visit the World War II Memorial. After returning home from the war, Archie worked for Toledo Edison in Sandusky, Ohio as a Lineman. After having an accident at Toledo Edison, Archie got employment at Union Carbide in Ashtabula and worked there for 38 years, retiring as a Railroad Yard Forman. He worked part time as an Auxiliary Police Officer for the Geneva Police Department for many years. He also worked at Western County Court as a Bailiff, retiring from there at age 85. He was a member of the American Legion George Call Post #124; the VFW Post 6846 in Geneva; the Fraternal Order of Eagles #2243; a Honorary member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Post #114 and a charter member of FOPA Lodge number #74 that started in 1967. He enjoyed belonging to Softball Leagues in Geneva, playing catcher; a member of the North Center Tavern Golf League; and Thursday Night Men's Bowling League. He loved both hunting and fishing, especially catfishing and he loved the Geneva Marching Band. He and Ray Arndt made soup and delivered it for the Grape Jamboree set up committee every year. He enjoyed growing Zinnia flowers in his garden and taking bouquets all around town to the girls. Surviving him is his daughter, Diane Bilger-Hemmi of Geneva; a sister, Mickey Cauffield of Geneva; two granddaughters, Billie Rae Birch and Dawn Marie (Brian) Hemmi-Abbott; great-grandchildren, Robert, Paul, Matthew and Tina Guzzo and Brian Abbott Jr.; many nieces and nephews; and best friends, Bob Cunningham, Richard Stevens and Les Hill. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Fran Bilger; a brother, John Bilger; and a sister, Leota Meyers. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 17th, at the Geneva Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS, 323 S. Broadway, Geneva, with Judge Richard Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery with VFW Post 6846 conducting Military Rites. Calling Hours will be from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 16th, at the Funeral Home.
