Read More	Arlene Anne Edwards Garner, daughter of Ralph H. and Dorthy Verle (Long) Edwards was born August 30, 1929 at home in Derby, Iowa. She died July 5, 2007 at the Clarke County Hospital in Osceola, Iowa due to complications from congestive heart failure. She was 77. Before Arlene was 1 year old, the Edwards family moved to Osceola where Arlene attended grade school and high school, graduating in 1947 from Osceola High School where she participated in marching band playing the clarinet. She also played the clarinet in the City Band in the late 1940s. Arlene married Gerald William Garner September 10, 1948 at the old Christian Church in Osceola. They lived in an apartment in the upstairs of Ralph and Marie Kimmel's house before moving to the Garner farm, north of Osceola, where their daughter, Dorothy was raised. Arlene did secretarial work all of her life. She worked at Iowa Southern Utilities, when they were first married; and then for A.F. Means Company and as District Clerk for the Soil Conservation Service, retiring there in 1977. During this time she also was Gerald's secretary/bookkeeper for his business, Garner Trenching. She enjoyed reading, working her word search puzzle books, needle point on plastic canvas, flowers, watching their birds at their bird feeders and bird bath, watching the deer in their yard (until they ate her tulips). She also enjoyed accompanying Gerald to the various antique tractor shows around the states of Iowa, Illinois and Missouri, where they met and became friends with some wonderful people. She was a member of the Clarke County Old Iron Club, which Gerald started in 1997. In September 1998, Gerald and Arlene rode in style to their 50th wedding anniversary celebration. They rode in a scale model John Deere wagon, which was pulled by Gerald's 1940 John Deere model "L" tractor. On May 15, 2000 Arlene was selected as Queen for a Day in a Mother's Day contest sponsored by the Sentinel-Tribune and participating Osceola merchants by an essay that Dorothy had written about her mother and submitted. Arlene had the ability to go places with the help of her little scooter chair, after she was unable to walk, always with a smile on her face (because she could out run you in it). Even in her last days, she had a smile for the nurses, who took excellent care of her in the hospital. Arlene had accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior in March 1941 at a tabernacle meeting set up on the north side of the Courthouse in Osceola, with H.K. Harper, evangelist, where she and her sister, Irene, "walked the sawdust trail". She was a charter member of the Community Bible Church, which is now Calvary Bible Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother-in-law. Wayne Garner; brother, Roy Edwards; sister-in-law, Bertha Edwards and nephew, Raymond Edwards. She is survived by her loving and caring husband, Gerald of Osceola; daughter, Dorothy Bowlsby and husband Keith of Osceola; brother, Wally Edwards and wife Bea of Indianola; sister, Irene Stalcup and husband Clarence of Murray; brother-in-law, Norman Garner of Phoenix, Arizona and sister-in-law, Norma Erickson and husband Bruce of Fertile, Minnesota, 12 nieces and nephews, several great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
