Description	:	SHEFFIELD — Arlene Beatrice Schrupp, 87, passed away Monday (May 30, 2005) at Sheffield Care Center, where she had resided for five weeks. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, Sheffield, with the Rev. R. Karl Watkins presiding. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery. Arlene was born in Sheffield on Dec. 8, 1917, to James and Rose Hawke. Sheffield remained Arlene's lifelong home. She graduated from Sheffield High School and at the age of 18 began her teaching career; one year at Geneseo and eight years at Pleasant Valley No. 7, both rural country schools in Cerro Gordo County. During this time, she met Ernest S. Schrupp and they were married on June 6, 1942, in Missouri, prior to Ernest's World War II deployment overseas. During the summer months, Arlene continued taking post-graduate classes in colleges from Iowa to California. After Ernest returned from World War II, he and Arlene briefly made their home in LeMars before returning to Sheffield to live on the farm west of Sheffield where Arlene had been born. In 1959, they built their current residence on Fourth Street in Sheffield. In 1955, after being a stay-at-home mom, Arlene returned to teaching at Sheffield-Chapin Public Schools where she taught third and fourth grades, plus performing the duties of acting elementary principal (1958-64) and building head (1964-79). She retired from teaching in 1979 after 35 years. A respected and devoted educator, Arlene, ironically, did not receive her B.S. degree in elementary education until 1966 from UNI in Cedar Falls. For the community of Sheffield and the generations she taught she will always be remembered as "Mrs. Schrupp." Arlene loved traveling, playing bridge and cribbage, playing golf with Ern and her friends, lake and trout fishing, working crossword puzzles, and reading her Bible, all of which became difficult in recent years due to macular degeneration. She was a member of Sheffield United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women's Organization, Harlow Ray Massee Post 277 American Legion Auxiliary, a 50-year member of PEO and Eastern Star, several bridge clubs, and Ridge Stone Golf and Country Club. She was always proud of the accomplishments of "our little town." Arlene is survived by her two daughters: Nicollet Ann Markovetz and her s.o., Jim Mullen, Iowa City, and Deanna Kathryn Berisha and her husband, Gani, Tucson, Ariz.; two grandsons: Heath Markovetz, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Trevor Miller, Tucson, Ariz.; two step grandchildren: Genc and Sabria Berisha, Tucson; Ariz.; a sister, Maxine Jensen, Clarion; two sisters-in-law: Marjorie (Melvin) Hawke, Mason City, and Ruby (Dallas) Hawke, Dumont; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; step-mother, Meda (Clark) Hawke; her husband, Ernest (1991); a sister, Doris Foell; brothers, Dallas and Melvin; sons-in-law, Dr. Alan Markovetz and Gary Miller; and several nephews and nieces.
