Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Schmitz officiating. Burial will be in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Crofton. Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Arlene Catherine Arens was born on July 9, 1926 on a farm southwest of Crofton to George and Caroline (Luellman) Meyer. She attended country school and graduated from Bloomfield High School. Arlene graduated from the Wayne State Teachers College and then taught country school in Crofton District 648 (the same school she attended as a child) until she was married. She married Clarence A. Arens on August 23, 1948 in Crofton, NE. She and Clarence resided on a farm southwest of Crofton and raised five children there until 1971. Arlene had worked at Gurney's Seed and Nursery in Yankton and was the Superintendent's Secretary for the Crofton High School. She also was the bookkeeper for her husband Clarence's construction business. Clarence built their home west of Crofton in 1973. After Clarence died on May 27, 2001 at the age of 78 years, Arlene moved into Crofton in July of 2002. She moved to Autumn Winds Assisted Living in Yankton in 2011. She had been living at the Avera Yankton Care Center since 2012. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, its choir, St. Rose Guild and Christian Mothers. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, a former 4-H leader, Pleasant Hour Extension Club, Crofton Senior Center. She and Clarence worked on the Dolphin Township Election Board for elections and belonged to the Crofton Ladies Golf League and many card clubs. Arlene is survived by her four children and their spouses, Deanna and Chuck Schieffer of Camarillo, CA, Renee and Keith Zimmerman of Crofton, NE, Crystal and Dale Becker of Mesa, AZ, David and Lorna Arens of Crofton, NE; son-in-law Jim Jacobus of Peoria, AZ; 12 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; two brothers and spouses Clayton and Josephine Meyer of Medford, OR, Allen and Susan Meyer of Ft. Myers, FL; two sisters Agnes DeLaRoi of Bloomfield, NE, and Shirley and Maurice Juhlin of Johnston, IA; brothers-in-law James Parsons of LeBec, CA, Irvin Arens of Randolph, NE, Gerald Arens of Hartington, Alvin and wife Sharon Arens of Norfolk, NE, sister-in-law Eleanor and husband Marion Nelson of St. Helena, NE; sister-in-law Margaret Arens Yates of Crofton, NE. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clarence A. Arens; daughter Robin Jacobus; sister Dottie Parsons; and a brother Gaylord Meyer; twin great grandchildren Matt and Katie Hochstein; brothers and sisters-in-law John DeLaRoi, Gaylord and Violet Meyer and Claire Meyer, Albert and Cecilia Reifenrath, Raymond and Leona Thunker, Raymond and Frances Arens & Norma Jean Arens, Lawrence and MaryAnn Arens, Norbert and Viola Reifenrath, Barb Arens and Harold Arens.
