The funeral service will be at Gass Haney Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Odom officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church, Platte County Historical Society, or the donor's choice. Arlene Kummetz was born January 8, 1922, on a farm northeast of Genoa in Platte County, Nebraska, to Albert and Jennie (Nelson) Stenzel. At age two she moved with her family to the O'Kay community north of Monroe. There she finished the tenth grade at District 32 School. She graduated from the Monroe High School in 1939. By attending Midland College in Fremont, Nebraska, one semester and passing the State Teacher's Exam, she earned a three year Elementary Teacher's Certificate. She began teaching at District 3 northwest of Columbus. On December 30, 1942, Arlene married Wilbert Kummetz in Monroe, Nebraska. They farmed together on farms near Columbus, Monroe, St. Edward, and Newman Grove. They moved to Columbus in 1956. In 1958 Wilbert was diagnosed with cancer. He passed away in February 1960. Arlene had renewed her teaching certificate and had started teaching at District 5 southwest of Columbus. In 1962 she was hired to teach in the Columbus Public Schools in second grade. She taught at North Park School until 1965 when the Lost Creek School was taken into the Columbus School system. She was moved to the Lost Creek School where she taught until she retired in 1986, after having taught thirty years. Nearly all the college hours she earned were done through commuting to night classes while teaching or at summer school. She earned a "Bachelor's Degree in Science" in 1967 from Midland College in Fremont. In 1974 she earned a "Master's Degree in Counseling in the Elementary School" at Wayne State College, Wayne, Nebraska. She was always interested and involved with working in the church. Through the years she took part in church as a student and later a teacher in Sunday school and Bible School as Bible School director. She served on the church council two terms. She belonged to Ladies Aid, and the church circles while a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She belonged to NEA, NSEA, CEA, and the Retired Teachers of Columbus. She was a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Friends of Music. She enjoyed meeting with retired friends, and while able to attend the "Jolly Dollies." She enjoyed china painting, flowers, cross-word puzzles, watching the "Cubs", and little children. Arlene was currently a member of First Baptist Church where she enjoyed the bible study groups.
