Description	:	Arlyss Ortman was born to Henry and Sarah (Adrian) Ratzlaff on July 17, 1927 at Dolton, S.D., and died Sept. 12, 2018 at age 91. She completed high school in Freeman in 1944, one year at Freeman Jr. College and then taught three years in rural schools. On Sept. 12, 1948, she and Alvin Ortman were married. Read More	Arlyss Ortman was born to Henry and Sarah (Adrian) Ratzlaff on July 17, 1927 at Dolton, S.D., and died Sept. 12, 2018 at age 91. She completed high school in Freeman in 1944, one year at Freeman Jr. College and then taught three years in rural schools. On Sept. 12, 1948, she and Alvin Ortman were married. Arlyss enjoyed being a housewife, a mother to two sons, and a help-mate to her husband with the farm work. She counted it a privilege to live on the farm that was homesteaded by her Grandfather Adrian in 1874 and owned by the family until 2011. Nature (sunrise and sunsets), gardening, flowers, reading, journaling, and quilting for family, missions, and other organizations were all things that brought her enjoyment. Children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have all enjoyed her quilts. She was active in her church as a Sunday School teacher, pianist, Women in Mission, and she also volunteered at the Et Cetera Shoppe for many years. She delighted in raising her two sons, and spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A great heartache was the tragic death of son Jerry, and the loss of special daughters-in-law Pam and Brenda. Accepting and confessing Christ as her Savior, she was baptized and joined the Silver Lake M.B. church on Sept. 22, 1940. Her membership was transferred to the Bethel Mennonite Church in 1950 and then to Salem Zion Mennonite (North Church) in 1994. She was preceded in death by husband Alvin; son Jerry; her parents; sister Delila and brother Irvin. She is survived by her son, Wayne (Cinda), Sioux Falls, S.D.; grandchildren Heather (Brad) Chambers, Omaha, Neb. Sarah (Josh) Sturgis, Manson, Iowa, Jeremy (Emera), Freeman, Kellie (Dustin) Scholz, Sioux Falls; and step-grandchildren Drew Karstens, Rapid City, S.D., Nathan (Janelle) Karstens, Naples, Fla., and Briana Karstens, Sioux Falls; and 13 great -grandchildren.
