Freede ASHTABULA – Arnold E. Freede, 81, of Kain Avenue died Friday, January 8, 2010 at his home with his family, following an extended illness. “Arnie” was born November 3, 1928 in Ashtabula, the son of John Kay and Effie (Brown) Freede. He attended Ashtabula High School and worked as a Western Union Telegram delivery boy after school during WWII before enlisting in the US Army. He was stationed in Japan during the occupation following the war where he worked in a position which supported the US forces and also employed and managed Japanese civilians, helping them in their post-war recovery. He received a personal note of thanks from General Douglas MacArthur for his service during that time. Following his discharge from the military, Arnie attended trade school in Kansas City, where he met and married his wife of 59 years, Betty Louise (Lassman). He was employed by the Detrex Corporation for 38 years, advancing to the position of Plant Operations Manager, and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Arnie enjoyed boating and fishing, spending summers on Lake Erie with family, and many winters in the Florida Keys following his retirement where he treated each day as an adventure to be shared with his wife and many friends. An avid camping enthusiast, Arnie had the good fortune to enjoy a group camping trip with four generations of his family, and in May of this year was able to pass on his love of gardening by teaching his great-grandchildren to plant their own beans. He is survived by his wife Betty; five children, Linda (Sonny) Wallace of Ashtabula, Joyce Ann (Erich) Wittig of Hamilton, OH, David Eugene (Christine) Freede of Oklahoma City, OK, Arnold Wayne (Diane) Freede of Conway, SC, and Andrew John (Jon Westlake) Freede of Florence, KY; 13 grandchildren, Nat Wallace, Krista Licate, Corrie Wallace, Alex Fleischer, Adam Fleischer, Matthew Freede, Siobhan Gower, Heather Nemcheck, Karla Freede, Ryan Freede, Jennifer Blosser, Stephanie French, and Nicole Freede; 11 great-grandchildren, Jordan, Bruce, Aly, Caytlin, Jacob, Alaina, Quin, Daniel, Caleb, Landon, and Xzavier. He is also survived by brothers, Heber of Cortland, OH and Kenny Freede of Ashtabula and sister, Alda Burgoon of Jefferson. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Del, Guy and Glen Sloan and Chester and Chris Freede; and sisters, Velma Vitt and Jessie Freede. Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at the Zion Lutheran Church, 2310 West 9th Street, Ashtabula. Rev. Don Coulter, Pastor will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, N. Kingsville with full military honors. Calling hours will be from 6 pm to 8pm on Monday, January 11, 2010 at the Ducro Funeral Services and Crematory, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula.
