Betty L. Freede Sunday, March 8, 2015 JEFFERSON — Betty Louise Freede, age 85, passed away at the Jefferson Healthcare Center on Thursday, March 5, 2015, after a long wonderful life filled with love and ending in the long good-bye that is Alzheimer's disease. Betty was born in Humboldt, Kan., on Oct. 22, 1929, the ninth of eleven children of Fred and Mary Pearl Lassman. She attended a one-room school house until eighth grade and then graduated from Humboldt High School. After graduation she left her small farming community to attend Chillicothe Business College. Upon earning her degree, she went to work in Kansas City where she met the young soldier from Ohio who would soon become her husband. Arnold Freede and Betty Lassman were married on April 25, 1950, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Humboldt and then traveled to Arnie's home town of Ashtabula, Ohio to make the home they would share for nearly sixty years. Home and family were the greatest joys of Betty’s life. She was a devoted wife, loving mother to her five children, and a much beloved grandma to thirteen grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren. Mom and Dad's little house on Kain Avenue was the very crowded gathering place for many wonderful parties and holiday celebrations with family, life-long friends and neighbors. She and her husband traveled all over the country, often camping with their children and grandchildren. Betty was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and in her younger years a member of Faith Lutheran and First English Lutheran where she taught Sunday school and adult Bible study. She worked for J.C. Penney for many years, retiring in 1986. After retirement, Betty and Arnie spent winters in the Florida Keys in an RV resort, a new adventure that brought them many new friends along with the sunshine. Betty is survived by her daughters, Linda (Sonny) Wallace of Ashtabula and Joyce (Erich) Wittig of Hamilton, Ohio; sons, David (Christine) of Newcastle, Okla., Skip (Diane) of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Andy (Jon Westlake) Freede of Florence, Ky.; grandchildren, Nat Wallace, Krista Licate, Corrie Benne, Alex and Adam Fleischer, Matthew Freede, Siobhan Gower, Heather Nemchek, Karla, Ryan and Nicole Freede, Jennifer Blosser and Stephanie Bohardt; and 26 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her youngest brother, Fred Lassman of Humboldt, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Freede on Jan. 8, 2010; her parents; her brothers, Clarence, Alvin, Ernest, Ralph, Clyde, Robert, Lloyd and Lonnie Lassman; and her sister, Helen Sowell. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff of Jefferson Healthcare and Tridia Hospice for their dedicated commitment to Betty’s comfort and care during the last years of her life. Calling Hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 Noon, with a Service to follow at 12 noon, on Monday, March 9th, at Lighted Cross Lutheran Church (formerly Zion Lutheran Church), 2310 W. 9th St., Ashtabula. The Rev. Don Coulter, Pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in Thompson, will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville. Memorial contributions may be made to The Abiding Memorial Fund of Lighted Cross Lutheran Church or Tridia Hospice. Arrangements entrusted to DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES AND CREMATORY, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula. Obituary at www.ducro.com and starbeacon.com.
