Steffen, the son of August and Lillian Steffen, was born December 20, 1912 in Pilot township, Iowa county, Iowa. He was baptized in infancy in the Zion Reform Church in Pilot township January 26, 1913 and as a youth was confirmed in the same church. He received his education in the rural schools. Steffen, the son of August and Lillian Steffen, was born December 20, 1912 in Pilot township, Iowa county, Iowa. He was baptized in infancy in the Zion Reform Church in Pilot township January 26, 1913 and as a youth was confirmed in the same church. He received his education in the rural schools. On Jan. 16, 1935 he was united in marriage to Jennie Smith of Victor. To this union two daughters were born. After their marriage they made their home on the farm until 1960. At this time they moved to Victor where they made their home. After coming to Victor Mr. and Mrs. Steffen united with the St. James Lutheran Church where he was a member at the time of his death. Mr. Steffen worked at the Amana refrigeration plant before coming to Victor and since as long as his health permitted. He entered the Community hospital in Grinnell on Tuesday, April 23 about 2:30 p.m. Death came that same evening at 9 p.m. at the age of 55 years, 4 months and 3 days. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Jennie, two daughters, Sylvia, Mrs. Marvin Root, of Belle Plaine; Arlene, Mrs. William Nagel, of Ames; one granddaughter Lucinda Kay Root, his mother, Mrs. Lilly Steffen of Williamsburg, three brothers, August and Rubon, both of Williamsburg, and Edwin of Cedar Rapids, besides other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father who passed away Sept. 16, 1950. Funeral services were held from the St. James Lutheran Church Friday, April 26, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Edward Beckmann officiating. Two organ solos, "The Lord is My Shepherd I'll Not Want" and "Who Knows When Death May Overtake Me" were played by Miss Jane McHarg at the organ. Flowers were cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Tanner and Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Seye. Casket bearers were nephews: August Steffen Jr., Eugene Smith, Phillip Steffen, Terry Gorsch, James Steffen and D. Smith. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Victor.
