Description	:	Arnold "Arnie" Ellsworth Harris, age 92, a longtime resident of Boone County, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at the Boone County Hospital. Arnie was born on December 3, 1917, the son of Clarence Allison and Ethel E. (Ellsbury) Harris of Ridgeport, Iowa. He attended Happy Valley Country School # 5. Read More	Arnold "Arnie" Ellsworth Harris, age 92, a longtime resident of Boone County, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at the Boone County Hospital. Arnie was born on December 3, 1917, the son of Clarence Allison and Ethel E. (Ellsbury) Harris of Ridgeport, Iowa. He attended Happy Valley Country School # 5. Arnie married Marie Annabelle Wilcox on January 29, 1939. A year later Arnie started a tradition of giving a red rose to Marie for every year of marriage. The tradition continued until the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. On their 51st anniversary Marie bought one red rose for Arnie and the tradition continued of adding another rose until they celebrated their 71st anniversary two weeks ago. Arnie farmed near Pilot Mound until 1958. During that time he played fast pitch softball, coached and managed several fast pitch softball and baseball teams, sang in the Pilot Mound Men's Choir, raised and showed registered Duroc hogs, served as a 4-H club leader, served as hog judge at county fairs, umpired high school baseball games and tournaments throughout Iowa, and served as a member of the Pilot Mound School Board. In 1958 the family left the farm and moved onto an acreage at the west edge of Boone. Arnie found work first as a molder at Quinn Wire & Iron Works and subsequently as the Head Swine Herdsman at the Veterinary Medical Research Institute at Iowa State University. During that time he greatly enjoyed playing golf, singing in church and at special occasions, raising and selling Duroc hogs, supporting 4-H activities, operating a small black walnut nutmeat and shell business, and helping Marie write and publish her book entitled "Story of the Roses" which tells the story of their life during the farming years. In 2002 the Iowa Duroc Breeders honored Arnie and Marie for their many contributions to the development of the Duroc breed in Iowa. In 2003 they were selected as the Marshall of the Boone County Fair Parade. They were also inducted that year into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame in recognition of their many contributions and support to 4-H activities in Boone County and the State. Arnold was a member of the Central Christian Church of Boone, the Mount Olive Lodge No. 79 A.F. & A.M.of Boone, serving as Worshipful Master in 1997, and Rhodes Lodge No. 303 A.F. & A.M. of Ogden, serving as Worshipful Master in 1998, and a member of the High Twelve Club No. 72 of Boone. Arnie was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers, Arthur and Albert. He is survived by his wife, Marie A. Harris of Boone; his son, Robert A. Harris and wife, Karen K. of Carmel, Indiana; his son D.L. Hank Harris and wife, Isabel of Ames, Iowa; his daughter, Patsy A. Larson of Boone; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and numerous other relatives. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 13, at the Central Christian Church, Boone, with Rev. Paul Fraser officiating. Masonic Rites were also held. at the church. Memorials in memory of Arnold "Arnie" Harris have been established for the Central Christian Church of Boone and the Boone County 4-H Foundation. Walter ~ Schroeder Funeral Home (formerly at Fifth & Story Streets in Boone) was in charge of the arrangements.
