Description	:	Marie Annabelle (Wilcox) Harris, age 95, a longtime resident of Boone County, Iowa, passed away on May 19, 2017 at the Madrid Home. Born on June 14, 1921, Marie was the daughter of Roy Robert and Iona Ann (Hoffman) Wilcox of Ridgeport, Iowa. Read More	Marie Annabelle (Wilcox) Harris, age 95, a longtime resident of Boone County, Iowa, passed away on May 19, 2017 at the Madrid Home. Born on June 14, 1921, Marie was the daughter of Roy Robert and Iona Ann (Hoffman) Wilcox of Ridgeport, Iowa. She attended Happy Valley Country School #5 and Boone High School and was active in boys 4-H. Marie married Arnold "Arnie" Ellsworth Harris on January 29, 1939. A year later Arnie started a tradition of giving a red rose to Marie for every year of marriage. The tradition continued until the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. On their 51st anniversary Marie bought one red rose for Arnie and the tradition continued of adding another rose until they celebrated their 71st anniversary. Arnie and Marie farmed near Pilot Mound where they raised three children: Robert (Bob), DL (Hank), and Patsy. During that time Marie helped with planting and harvesting of crops, raising livestock, baked thousands of pies and loaves of bread, supported the children in their 4-H activities, served as 4-H leader, and participated in the Mothers Club. In addition, Marie worked at the Bon Appetite restaurant and the Boone Hospital. She later became a Supervisor of Food Services at Iowa State University where she worked for 23 years before retiring in 1984. Marie great enjoyed reading and writing poetry. Her book "Story of the Roses", which describes her life during the farming years, is a family treasure. In 2002 the Iowa Duroc Breeders honored Arnie and Marie for their contributions to the development of the Duroc breed in Iowa. They were honored to be selected as Boone County Fair Parade Marshalls in 2003. They were also inducted that year into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame in recognition of their many contributions and support to 4-H in Boone County and the State. She was preceded in death by her beloved Arnie, her parents, two brothers Robert (Bobby) Nicholas, and Kenneth Junior. She is survived by her sister Phyllis Cunningham (Bryce) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, sister-in law Rozella Wilcox of Boone, son Bob (Janet) of Overland Park, Kansas, son Hank (Isabel) of Ames, Iowa; daughter, Patsy Larson (Mark Edwards) of Boone; grandchildren Kelda Kaye Walsh, Chris Robin Harris, Heidi Ann Harris, Shawn Michael Harris, Wendi Harris, Susan Marschke, Hunter Harris Larson, Zachary Michael Larson-Rabin, Joel Turney Harris, Dillon C Harris,; 13 great grandchildren; numerous other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 3, 2017 at the Central Christian Church, Boone, IA with Rev. Susan Moore officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Madrid Home.
