Arnold was born March 17th, 1920 to Johnny & Olga (Bjerke) Bye near Hatton, N.D. He attended rural school in Newburgh Township and was baptized and confirmed in the Goose River Lutheran Church. Bye, 84, of Hatton, died Wednesday, Sept. 22nd at the Union Hospital at Mayville, N.D. Arnold was born March 17th, 1920 to Johnny & Olga (Bjerke) Bye near Hatton, N.D. He attended rural school in Newburgh Township and was baptized and confirmed in the Goose River Lutheran Church. He served in the U.S. Army from Dec. 1, 1941 until Oct. of 1945 when he received his honorable discharge. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands and the European Theater where he was wounded in combat. He was awarded the Purple Heart. After his military service he was employed briefly in Minneapolis, Mn. until he began farming in Newburgh Township near Hatton, ND. He married Thrine Johnson in November of 1946. They continued farming until they retired to Hatton in 1981 where they made their home. He was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1996. He is survived by his wife, 2 sons, Gerald (Adele) of Hatton, John (Jean) of Fargo, 4 grandchildren, Jesse, Hatton, N.D., Tyler, Fargo, ND, Kari, Minneapolis, Mn., Christian, Fargo, ND, 2 brothers, Alfred (Ruby) of Hatton, Orvis (Marilyn) also Hatton, 3 sisters, Marie Pederson, Hatton, Frances (Reuben) Braaten, Mayville, ND, Delores (Bob) Kringlen, of Larimore, nephews & nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather Alfred, 1 brother, Clarence and infant sister Bertha. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 25th at 2:00 P.M. in the St. John Lutheran Church at Hatton with Pastor Chris Hallanger officiating. The organist was Darlene Owen and the soloist Elaine Flaten. The casketbearers were Donald Bye, Randy Bye, Ricky Pederson, Steven Braaten, Clyde Kringlen and Bradley Ness. The Honorary Pallbearers were all Arnold’s Nephews and Nieces. The Presentation of the Flag was by the Carroll O. Flesche Post #70, Hatton American Legion. The interment was held in the St. John Cemetery, Hatton. The Bilden Funeral Home, Hatton, in charge of arrangements.--Hatton Free Press, September 29, 2004.
