W. VANDENBERG PASSING Funeral Services For Departed Man Were Friday Arnold W. Vandenberg, 71, resident and respected farmer of Center township for over fifty years, died at his home in David City, Wednesday, Dec. 4. Although he suffered a stroke of paralysis two years ago from which he had never recovered, pneumonia was the cause of his death, his last illness being of two weeks duration. Hollandtown, Wis., was the birth place of Mr. Vandenberg and February 14, 1874 was the date of his birth. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Vandenberg. Coming to Butler county in 1893 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Vanderheiden in St. Francis church, Center, three years later. Together they commenced housekeeping on a farm one mile east and two miles south of the Center church, making a home for the eleven children which blessed this union. Even though blinded in an accident while blasting tree stumps with dynamite several years ago, Mr. Vandenberg remained on the farm, lending assistance to his sons with valuable advice in their farming. When he became ill in August, 1942, it was deemed advisable to move to David City. Mrs. Vandenberg survives her husband, as do six sons, Henry and Clement of Brainard, Albert of Denver, Colo., Martin and Benedict of David City and Bale [Gale[, who resided in Olympia, Wash., until recently; four daughters, Mrs. Henrietta Litty of Culver City, Calif., Mrs. Martha Lukassen of Kimball, Mrs. Dorothy Bongers of Brainard, and Mr. Ardine Kanouff of Omaha. One son, Nicholas, died when a child. Other survivors are four sisters, Mrs. Neely Vanable, Mrs. Margaret Biebil, Miss Bardine Vandenburg and Mrs. Ann Metz, and three brothers, John, William and George. Funeral services were held in St. Francis Catholic church Friday at 10:30 a.m., Rev. Joseph A. Plewa, pastor of St. Francis church, was celebrant of the mass, and also spoke a few words of tribute to the life of his departed parish member; Rev. Edward Kolar, Appleton was deacon of the mass; Rev. J. P. Gadient, David City, was sub-deacon, and Rev. Vincent Callahan, master of ceremonies. Rev. William A. Murphy delivered a short sermon. Present in the sanctuary also was Rt. Rev. Msgr. Alois J. Klein of Brainard, who officiated at the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Vandenberg 49 years ago. St. Francis choir furnished the music and Miss Beatrice Vandenberg sang, “Ave Maria.” With exception of Mrs. Litty, all of the Vandenberg sons and daughters were present at the funeral services. Other relatives coming from away were George Kanouff of Omaha and Fred Lukassen of Kimball, sons-in-law; Mrs. Gale Vandenberg and two children; Bardine Vandenberg of Milwaukee, Wis.; Mrs. Joe Van Ert daughter and son-in-law from Norfolk; Mrs. A. J. Schaaf and daughter and family from McCook; Lou Vanderheiden from Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Henry Vanderheiden and two sons and families from Elgin; Dr. Joe Lanspa and Mrs. Leo Brochtrup from Tecumseh; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Lanspa and Miss Nellie Kuncl of Shelby; Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Miller of Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. William Schliekbern of Beemer and Mrs. Elizabeth Keller of Los Angeles, Calif.
