Stewart of West Union, and well known here as a musician and piano tuner. Arthur Meyer, oldest son of John and Julia Meyer, was born on a farm near Maynard, March 6, 1892, and died at his home in Maynard, Nov. 9, 1918, aged twenty-six years, eight months and three days. When fourteen months old he lost his sight as the result of severe convulsions caused by teething. At first it was hoped it might be only temporary but as one specialist after another was consulted, always with same verdict, "no hope", his parents sadly accepted the fact that the light had gone from the eyes of their boy forever. At seven years of age he was placed in the school for the blind at Vinton, Iowa, and from the first his progress was rapid. Possessed naturally of a brilliant mind, and with all his faculties sharpened by the loss of sight, his advancement was unusual. He became a piano tuner and an accomplished musician. He completed the twelve year course at Vinton, and graduated with honors. He afterwards studied advanced music at Cedar Rapids, and St. Paul. He possessed a voice of wonderful depth and sweetness, and only a short time ago he sang at the funeral of his aged grandmother, the beautiful solo, "The Holy City". Early in life he received religious instruction and in 1912 was confirmed in the doctrines of the Lutheran church. He was a thorough bible student and greatly enjoyed the poetry of the scriptures, being able to repeat many beautiful psalms from memory. Reading was his chief enjoyment, and his family and friends being always ready to gratify this desire, his knowledge was broad and universal. Especially was he interested in all topics of public interest, and no one waited for the daily news of the great war more eagerly than he. It was a great cross to him that he could not take an active part in the struggle going on for the welfare of humanity -However, he did his "bit", as the many beautifully knitted articles made by him for the soldiers testify. And one who had their sight might well be proud to claim them as their handiwork.
