Big Timber Pioneer, August 30, 1917 Big Timber Youth Drowns in Plunge Ventured into Deep Water and Help Hurried Too Late Rescuers Lost Body Drowning Man Had Apparently Gotten Back Under Railing -- James Proved a Hero. Irwin MJolsness son of Mrs, John Mjolsness of Big Timber Creek, was drowned in the big plunge at Hunters Hot Springs Sunday evening. Word reached this city shortly after the unfortunate accident and Undertaker J. A. Lowry went to the Springs and brought the body to this city. The story as told by William James a dry lander, and better known as pitcher for the Big Timber ball team, is as follows; James was on the spring board at the deep end of the plunge and Mjolsness came down the water pipe, along the outer edge, hand over hand. James called to him to come and dive, and he replied that he could not even swim. James then dived from the board, coming up some distance away. Looking back he could not see Mjolsness, and fearing something might have happened started back. Mjolsness came to the top and sank again. James dived and caught the drowning man who caught him around the hips and dragged him down. Seeing that he was in a bad hole James put his knees against the stomach of Mjolsness and freed himself, then came to the top, Moljsness came to the top a second time, went down again, and James followed and caught him by the hair. He tried with all his might to raise the body but came up with only a handful of hair. James then got out of the plunge and ran up the side to a crowd who had not paid any attention when he called for help and told them a man was drowning. All hurried down and some who were dressed took off their coats and jumped in. No trace of the man could be found by diving, but finally, one of the rescuing party got on the board, dived toward the railing, and found the body underneath the piping. Every effort known was made to resuscitate the man who had been under about 26 minutes, but with avail. Mjolsness was 23 years, 10 months and 3 days of age. He had been raised in this vicinity and was a young man of good habits, and his untimely end was deeply regretted by hundreds of friends and acquaintances. The funeral held at the Lutheran church Tuesday afternoon was largely attended by friends and acquaintances of the family, the pallbearers being Ornie Davis, Cecil Barnett, Laverne Gough, Harry Clouse, Lew and Walter Overfelt.
