Description	:	A decorated Vietnam combat veteran, Arthur Ward, was killed early Sunday morning shortly after telling his wife ". . . I am going to take the car and kill myself !" The incident occurred at the Eagleville Barbeque dance where officers said that Ward became embroiled in an argument with his wife and made the threat. The incident occurred at the Eagleville Barbeque dance where officers said that Ward became embroiled in an argument with his wife and made the threat. He then drove south at "an excessive rate of speed" and about one and a half miles from Eagleville Modoc Road No. 1 failed to negotiate a curve. His late model vehicle went into a broadside skid for approximately 190 feet, then rolled over several times ejecting Ward from the machine. His wife informed Surprise Valley Deputy Sheriff Vern Hill of the incident and he immediately pursued Ward, arriving at the scene only a matter of minutes from the time of the accident. He was taken to the Modoc Medical Center in Cedarville where he expired from multiple injuries about 5 a.m. The deceased was born in Lakeview on March 1, 1945, and attended schools in Eagleville, Adin, and was graduated from Modoc Union High School in 1963. He entered the Army in 1965 and saw combat duty in Vietnam over a one year period. He was discharged in September of 1967 and on January 27, 1968, he married Christine Romesha of Lake City. The couple had been residing in Alturas where Ward was employed at Calandor Pine. Saturday he had returned from Redding where he had made final arrangements for enrolling in Shasta College this fall. Funeral services were conducted in Alturas Wednesday from Kerr Chapel and interment was in the Eagleville cemetery Obituary from Modoc County Record August 1, 1968 Mr. Ward was awarded the National Defense Medal, Marksman Badge w/Rifle Bar, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Vietnam Service Medal.
