Description	:	Martha Justine (Cook) Ward Osborn of Cedarville, California passed away at the Surprise Valley Hospital, on September 21, 2011, at the age of 90. She was born on November 22, 1920, in Portola, California to Ernest and Alta (Franklin) Cook. Ernie, Alta and baby Justine were soon joined by sister Margie, Norma, Ernestine and Eloise. Many happy hours were spent playing with the lambs and calves on the ranch at Eagleville, dancing, singing a cappella and entertaining folks as a quintet "The Singing Cook Sisters." Read More	Martha Justine (Cook) Ward Osborn of Cedarville, California passed away at the Surprise Valley Hospital, on September 21, 2011, at the age of 90. She was born on November 22, 1920, in Portola, California to Ernest and Alta (Franklin) Cook. Ernie, Alta and baby Justine were soon joined by sister Margie, Norma, Ernestine and Eloise. Many happy hours were spent playing with the lambs and calves on the ranch at Eagleville, dancing, singing a cappella and entertaining folks as a quintet "The Singing Cook Sisters." In Justine's own words, "The crowning glory was when we auditioned at KFBK Radio Staion in Sacramento." The audition was a success but the girls were too young for a radio career. Justine was 15 at the time. The girls all settled back into their lives on the ranch. Justine graduated from Surprise Valley High School and later attended Business College in Sacramento, CA. She returned to the ranch in Eagleville. She became engaged to and later eloped with her sweetheart, Ray L. Ward on July 4, 1941 in Reno, Nevada. They began their married life in Surprise Valley where Ray rented the Ward Estate Ranch and later worked for Justine's father, Ernest Cook on the ranch at Eagleville. Ray and Justine raised four children, Dee Anna (Snow), Arthur, Edward and Leland in Eagleville, Adin and Alturas. Justine hepled Ray with the ranch work; worked as a Forest Service Lookout at Fox Mountain near Adin; as a checker at Gysin's Market in Alturas and finally worked as a clerk for the Modoc County Road Department in Alturas where she retired after 20 years. Justine loved to garden, cook, quilt, read and listen to George Strait sing his county songs. She was an energetic, entertaining and feisty lady much loved by her friends and family members. She was preceded in death by her parents Ernest Cook and Alta Cook Desavedo; son Arthur Ward; sister Ernestine Cook Burmester; second husband John Osborne and daughter Dee Ann Ward Snow. Justine is survived by her sons Edward (Tracy) and Leland (Kathy) Ward, both in Alturas; son-in-law Derrel Snow of Anderson; grandchildren: Mike Snow (Audrey (deceased)); Tammie Snow Battles (Jim); Dean (Chris) Snow; Tim (Sue) Snow; Craig Ward; Jody (Anita) Ward; Daren Ward; Jennifer Ward Doss; Amy Ward; Wendy (David) Miller; Jason Piscitello and Ashley Piscitello; great grandchildren: Amber, April, Angie Adrienne Snow; Shane, Felicia, Drew Battles; Levi, Daphne, Emily, Melissa, Caleb Snow; Shaun, Travis, Stephanie Snow; Austin Ward; Tristenm Kylen Ward; Wyatt, West Ward and Kylee Ward; great-great grandchildren: Amelia and Avery Snow. Justine is also survived by her sisters: Norma (Steve) Seward and family of Redding; Eloise (Don) Schultz and family of the San Diego area; nieces Krisi Schumann and family; Amerilyn Rivett and family; nephews: Bill Rose and family; Cliff and Jeff Burmester and families, along with many loving friends and extended relatives. Justine spent her last few years as a resident at Surprise Valley Hospital where she was loved be both the staff and residents which knew her as Martha. Her sense of humor and joy of life brightened many hearts. She was so happy to be back home in Surprise Valley and be able to see the changing seasons on the mountain from her hospital window. The family is so grateful for the wonderful and loving care she received in her final years. Services were held on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at the Eagleville Community Church with interment at the Eagleville Cemetery, where she rests with her family and her beloved Ray Ward.
