Art was born on Dec. 1, 1918, in Wausa, Neb., to Fred and Mary (Test) Hansen. His father died three weeks after he was born during the flu epidemic of 1918. He graduated from Wakefield (Neb.) High School in 1938 and attended Wayne State Teachers College for two years prior to enlisting in the National Guard in Sioux City in February 1940. He was in the service for less than a year when Pearl Harbor happened and he joined the 34th Division, the Red Bull Division serving in North Africa and Italy. He married Eunice Gustafson on April 28, 1945, and they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary this past April. After the war, Art worked at Northeast Nebraska Public Power District in Emerson, Neb. Then he ran the bowling alley and roller rink in Wakefield for a number of years. He worked at the Sioux City Stockyards for 40 years as office manager for Steele-Simon Commission Firm and Switzer-Beeson Commission Firm. After retiring from the stockyards, he and his wife worked part-time for a number of years for Southern Hills Hy-Vee. During his years while working at the stockyards, Art's family made the Morningside area of Sioux City their home and they attended Morningside Lutheran Church regularly. Art felt he was lucky and had a pretty good life. Family was important to him with three children, nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He thanked the Lord for his grandchildren every day. During his retirement years, Art enjoyed serving his church, golfing (finally giving up the sport when he turned 96), cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team and cheering on the Morningside College athletic teams, especially Morningside women's basketball. Art is survived by his wife, Eunice of Sioux City; his children, Randy (Becky) of Sioux City, Jane (Dennis) Mogensen of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Julie (Mike) Koson of Sioux City; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Faith Olson of Monterey, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
