Description	:	Art VanBockern, age 94, died Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at Sanford USD Medical Center. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Grand Valley Lutheran Church with burial to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Grand Valley Lutheran Church with burial to follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. Art was born June 17, 1916 in Sheldon, IA the son of Fred and Lena (Hassebroek) VanBockern. He attended Canton Public Schools. Art worked on several farms in Iowa before entering into the U.S. Army. Art served in the 90th Infantry Division with the 358th Regiment Company D Central Europe Rhineland. He was inducted January 22, 1942 from Lyon County, IA and discharged January 12, 1946. He received his Combat Infantry Badge and his Bronze Star from General George S. Patton. Art was united in marriage to Alma Aasheim September 10, 1949 at Lands Lutheran Church. The couple lived, farmed, and raised two children near Canton. Art was a member of the Grand Valley Lutheran Church, a life member of the V.F.W., active in the Color Guard, and was a proud American. Art was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Alma; great-granddaughter, Amelia Grace; sisters, Mabel, Ruth, June, Dorothy, and Lois; and brothers, Leo, Earl, and Dale. Grateful for having shared his life are his son, Fred (Alicia) VanBockern, Canton, SD; daughter, Glenda (Steve) Heath, Grand Island, NE; sister, Helen Severson, Canton, SD; brothers, Alvin, Canton, SD, Donald, Sioux Falls, and Richard (Dorothy), Canton, SD; sisters-in-law, Lillian Hanson, Harrisburg, SD, Lenore Monen, Sioux Falls, SD, and Melvina Aasheim, Canton, SD; brother-in-law, Dale Mydland, Sioux Falls; grandchildren, Patti & Mark Brands, Christi & Scott Henderson, Paul & Sherri Heath, Brent & Bethany Heath, and LenaMarie Heath and fiancÃà`, Nolan Johnson; great-grandchildren, Hayley Brands, Soren Brands, Gavin Henderson, Owen Heath, Everett Heath, Miah Heath, and Caleb Heath; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Art will be remembered for his sense of honor, faithfulness, and most of all his love of family and friends. Art went to Washington, D.C. on the SD Honor Flight on April 23-24, 2010 but on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 he went on the "Ultimate Honor Flight" to his heavenly home.
