Description	:	Arthur G. Sutcliff was born in Livingston, Illinois, in 1864, the second son of an English immigrant Robert Sutcliff and his wife Sarah Ann Long who was an Illinois native. His older brother, Robert M., was born in 1861; his younger brother, William T., was born in 1867. His mother died in 1875 when he was 11 years old and is buried in Livingston, Illinois. Sutcliff was born in Livingston, Illinois, in 1864, the second son of an English immigrant Robert Sutcliff and his wife Sarah Ann Long who was an Illinois native. His older brother, Robert M., was born in 1861; his younger brother, William T., was born in 1867. His mother died in 1875 when he was 11 years old and is buried in Livingston, Illinois. His father married Alice Pettibone and the family moved to Randall, Jewell County, Kansas; his step-mother had family already homesteading in Kansas. In 1885, Arthur, his father and brothers traveled west to Scott County, Kansas, and staked claims there. For a few years Arthur and brother Robert M. worked as "Sutcliff Brothers and Company" representing the Western Farm Mortgage Trust of Lawrence, KS, at Scott City, making loans, buying and selling farms. By 1889 Arthur was back in Jewell County teaching school as were his brothers. Arthur married Jennie Ratliff in August of 1891. In 1898, Arthur and his wife took a big step and purchased the furniture store in Randall and he resigned his teaching profession. They were active in the Randall community where their long awaited son, Harold C. Sutcliff, was born in December of 1901. Sadly he died in January of 1902 and is buried in the Pleasant Prairie Cemetery. Jennie continued to be Arthur's partner at home and in the furniture business. As was customary in those years undertaking/funeral services often accompanied the furniture business and Arthur became a licensed embalmer and funeral director. In 1903 the Sutcliff's sold their furniture business in Randall and relocated to Glasco, Cloud County, Kansas. Here they operated a fine furniture business and continued in the funeral services for the next ten years. They were involved in community and church activities. Arthur was noted to purchase a Studebaker automobile in 1909, one of the first in the area, and quite the item. In 1913, Arthur traded/sold the furniture business for an 80 acre farm east of Glasco. He retained the undertaking business. Arthur and Jessie move to Concordia in 1916. Arthur continued in the furniture and funeral business another ten years before selling the furniture/funeral business to George Chaput and his son Paul. The Chaput family had been in the furniture/funeral business in Aurora and Clyde for many years and the Chaput family continued in the funeral business well into the 21st century. Arthur ended a long and successful career. Arthur and Jennie enjoyed traveling in their automobile during their retirement years. Arthur died at the age of 67 in 1931, but not before he and Jennie adopted or fostered a daughter named Georgia Marie. His wife and daughter survived him.
