Description	:	Eureka --- The funeral for Arthur "Art" J. Serr, 80, of Eureka will be at 2 p.m. today at Eureka Reformed Church. The Rev. Herman Van Stedum will officiate. Burial will be in the Eureka City Cemetery with military rites by the Fred Weller American Legion Post No. 186 of Eureka. Carlsen Funeral Home in Eureka is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon today at the funeral home. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service today at the church. He died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at Avera Eureka Community Hospital. Arthur J. Serr was born July 30, 1920, to Peter and Katie (Schoeck) Serr in Linton, N.D. This is where he started his schooling. After his mother died, he went to live with his grandparents north of Herreid and completed his schooling. He then moved south of Eureka to live with his sister. He worked in the Eureka area as a farm laborer for several years. He then traveled to Belle Fourche to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1941. On Feb. 3, 1944, he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in the South Pacific and the Philippines as a truck driver, supplying the front line troops. He married Elaine Meidinger on May 3, 1944, in Eureka. He was honorably discharged on April 26, 1946. He then returned home to Eureka, where he held various jobs. In 1947, he started doing auto body work for a Chevrolet dealer. He then opened and operated his own body shop in Eureka, where he worked for 40 years. After he retired in 1993, he and his wife continued to make their home in Eureka. He was a member of Eureka Reformed Church and the Fred Weller American Legion Post No. 186, where he served on the Drill Squad for 20 years and on various committees. He was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a past Chamber of Commerce member. He enjoyed American Legion baseball and was active in organizing and scheduling games and tournaments. He also enjoyed fishing with his grandsons and playing pinochle. He was a fan of the Braves, the Cubs and enjoyed attending his grandsons' sporting activities. He also volunteered for many tasks. Survivors include his wife of Eureka; two sons, Timothy "Tim" (Bonnie) Serr of Eureka and Steven "Steve" Serr of Leola; one brother, Albert Serr of Eureka; two sisters, Loryne Deperey and Hilda Nelson, both of Green Bay, Wis.; two half brothers, Henry Serr of Mandan, N.D., and Theophil Serr of Yuma, Ariz.; one half sister, Elizabeth Fariase of Orange City, N.J.; one stepbrother, Edwin Bauer of Omaha, Neb.; and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers (three in infancy) one sister in infancy, one half brother and one daughter in infancy. Casketbearers will be T. J.
