Vicar Glen Stahlecker will officiate with burial in Lutheran Cemetery in rural Bristow. Military Rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #76 of Bristow. Visitation will be on Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Brockhaus Funeral Home in Spencer with a Prayer Service at 7:00 P.M. Organist will be Marlo Johnson. Arthur "Herbie" Hrbek was born June 25, 1943 in Lynch, NE, to Arthur and Sylvia (Mlady) Hrbek. He went to country school through the 8th grade in rural Holt County and graduated from Verdigre Public School in 1961. Upon graduation he farmed with his father and served in the National Guard. On October 10, 1964 he was married to Janice Prokop. From this union four children were born: Doug, Brenda, Stephanie and Jason. They later divorced. He was then united in marriage to Vernelle Ruda on September 30, 1993. Art moved to Bristow in early 1965 when he purchased Anoka/Butte Lumber and renamed it Bristow Lumber, which he continued to run until the time of his death. People came from near and far to have him get their chainsaw running or to pick up any fishing and hunting needs or gardening essentials. Art enjoyed his fishing excursions with his family and friends, whether it be a local farm pond or river or heading out to the Great Lakes. Every deer season you would find him heading to the annual Korb/Hrbek deer camp, which has now expanded to include the second and third generations. He was very proud that he only once missed a deer season and that was due to Guard duty. Art also took great pride in the garden he planted every year. He was always sharing his bountiful harvest with those who could use it. Art cherished the time he spent with his children and grandchildren. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the local Lions Club. He served on the fire department, including many years as the fire chief, and was also on the Bristow town board and was the town water commissioner. Art died Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Niobrara Valley Hospital in Lynch, NE of an apparent aneurysm. Art is survived by his wife, Vernelle; his children and grandchildren Doug and wife Ann, Katie, Emily, Sarah, Hannah and Ryan of West Point, NE; Brenda of Luverne, MN; Stephanie Kocian, Jordan and Tyler of Pierce, NE and Jason of Norfolk, NE; his mother, Sylvia Hrbek, and brother, David Hrbek and wife Loretta of Creighton, NE, his brother-in-law, Steve Ruda and wife Deb of Fremont, NE and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Hrbek, and his grandparents.
