Description	:	Arthur John Ulfers was born on a farm near Chancellor, South Dakota on September 1, 1923 to Arthur and Leone (DeVries) Ulfers. He attended grade school at the rural school district no. 90 and graduated from Chancellor High School in 1941. He worked on his father's farm after graduating from high school. He attended grade school at the rural school district no. 90 and graduated from Chancellor High School in 1941. He worked on his father's farm after graduating from high school. At the age of 8 years, his mother died. He attended Sunday School at Reformed Church and was a member of Christian Endeavor. He had three brothers and two sisters. His father re-married. Arthur had two half sisters. On January 6, 1942, Leo and Arthur Ulfers enlisted in the army at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Arthur was sent to Shepperd Field, Texas on February 24, 1942 for mechanics school. His brother Leo was sent to New Orleans for training. The brothers never saw each other again. Arthur graduated as a mechanic in June, 1942. He served as a mechanic at Santa Monica, California and Key Field, Mississippi. Arthur stared as flight cadet at Kessler Field, Mississippi. He attended preflight training at Maxwell Field, Alabama, primary training at Silver Springs, Florida, and received his wings at Turner Field, Georgia on September 8, 1944 as a Flight Officer. He spent the first two months as a Flight Officer in Columbia, S.C. and was transferred to Morris Field, North Carolina on December 20, 1944. He died in a plane accident near the field on January 24, 1945. Memorial services were held at the Chancellor Reformed Church on January 30, 1945 and he is interned at the Rose Hill Cemetery near Parker, South Dakota. He was survived by his father and step-mother, Arthur and Elizabeth Ulfers of Chancellor; his brother, Leo, stationed in England an pilot with the Eighth Air Force; Edward and Harold, at home; his sisters, Mrs. Elmer (Jean) Brass, Alpena, and Mrs. Marvin (Lyla) Wheelhouse, Lennox; two half sisters, Janet and Helen at home; and maternal grandmother, Florence DeVries of Davis.
