Description	:	Lincoln County recorded its first traffic fatality of the year on Sunday afternoon, Jun. 7, when a Lennox woman was killed in a car accident at county highway 111, a half mile south of Tea. The victim was a longtime local resident, Lyla Wheelhouse. She was on her way to Sioux Falls, taking home her 10 year old granddaughter, Kristine Weires, who had spent a couple days here with her. Read More	Lincoln County recorded its first traffic fatality of the year on Sunday afternoon, Jun. 7, when a Lennox woman was killed in a car accident at county highway 111, a half mile south of Tea. The victim was a longtime local resident, Lyla Wheelhouse. She was on her way to Sioux Falls, taking home her 10 year old granddaughter, Kristine Weires, who had spent a couple days here with her. Proceeding north, Mrs. Wheelhouse apparently ran off the east side of the road onto the shoulder and when she attempted to bring the vehicle back onto the highway, lost control and subsequently ran across the road and rolled in the ditch on the west side of the road. She was thrown from the car which rolled onto her. The little girl was not seriously injured, however continued to be a patient in Sioux Valley hospital. Lyla Rae Wheelhouse was born on a farm in Turner County, SD. near Chancellor, on Dec. 30, 1924,the daughter of Arthur and Leone (DeVries) Ulfers. She attended rural school, grew to woman hood on the farm and graduated from Chancellor High School. On Dec. 18, 1942 she was united in marriage to Marvin G. Wheelhouse at Albany, CA. He served in the Army during WW II and following his military service the couple returned to Lennox in 1945, and here she continued to make her home. Her husband preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 1975. She was a homemaker most of her life, and was employed at Virg's I.G.A. for the past 11 years. Besides her parents and husband,she was preceded in death by her step-mother and three brothers. Deceased is survived by one son, Lee Wheelhouse, of Lennox; two daughters, Mrs Larry (Marlene Kaye) Weires of Sioux Falls and Mrs. Clayton (Susan) Bierwagen of Trinidad, CO.; two granddaughters, Kristine Weiers and Cara Bierwagen; two brothers, Harold Ulfers of Tacoma, WA. and Edward Ulfers of Chino Valley, CA.; three sisters, Mrs. Elmer (Irma Jean) Brass of Seattle, WA., Mrs. Kenneth (Janet) Lottman of Dell Rapids, and Mrs. Darrel Smit of Chancellor.
