Dempsey Four Fulton county persons returning home from work at the Bendix corporation in South Bend were killed in a five-fatality, two-car, headon collision early this morning on U.S. 31, near Lakeville. The victims were George WEIDNER Jr., 49, R.R. 5, Rochester; Miss Vivian WENTZEL, 50, R.R. 1, Kewanna; Alfred LIMING, 51, Rochester; Arthur [SHIDLER], 33, Rochester, and John W. DEMPSEY, 72, South Bend. Boyd [SHIDLER], 36, Akron is in critical condition in the intensive care unit of South Bend Memorial hospital. The St. Joseph county sheriff's department stated the accident occurred at 12:25 o'clock about eight miles south of South Bend and 36 miles north of Rochester. The car with the Fulton county residents was going south. Witnesses told officers that the Dempsey auto was going north in the southbound lane of the dual-lane highway and had narrowly missed several north bound vehicles before crashing into the Fulton county car, which was driven by Liming. The Liming auto left 86 feet of skid marks. All five persons apparently were killed instantly, police said. Funeral arrangements for Alfred LIMING and Arthur SHIDLER are pending at the Foster & Good funeral home. ----- Published in The Rochester Sentinel Wednesday, August 22, 1973 Arthur Shidler Final rites will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the Foster & Good funeral home for Arthur [SHIDLER], 33, Rochester, who was killed early Tuesday morning in a five-fatality, two-car collision on U.S. 31 near Lakeville. The Rev. C. J. MOWRER will officiate. Burial will be the I.O.O.F. cemetery here. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Thursday. Mr. Schidler was born Sept. 11, 1939, in Kewanna to Darl and Olive COCHRAN SHIDLER. His marriage was Jan. 28, 1961, in Yakima, Wash., to Henrietta L. SCHROEDER; she survives. He had been a five-year employee of the Bendix corporation in South Bend. Prior to his employment at Bendix he had worked for the McMahan Construction company. He was a member of the Church of God and had served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 through 1962. Surviving with his wife and parents are three daughters, Tamra Lynn, Debra Ann and Katina Lynnanne [SHIDLER], all at home; a son, Arthur Lee [SHIDLER] Jr., also at home; one sister, Mrs. Ronald (Darlene) BIRD, of Chicago, and a brother, Boyd [SHIDLER], of Akron.
