Westmorland, England to Alfred Ryder and Annie McIntosh Ryder on August 25, 1886. The family immigrated to Canada in April 1888 to Toronto, Ontario and in 1889 homesteaded near Virden, Manitoba. In the 1895, his father homesteaded near Westhope, Bottineau County, North Dakota, USA a few miles southwest of his future wife's father's homestead. Westmorland, England to Alfred Ryder and Annie McIntosh Ryder on August 25, 1886. The family immigrated to Canada in April 1888 to Toronto, Ontario and in 1889 homesteaded near Virden, Manitoba. In the 1895, his father homesteaded near Westhope, Bottineau County, North Dakota, USA a few miles southwest of his future wife's father's homestead. His father was a stone mason and all the farm buildings were made of stone. That land is now part of the J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge. Immediately after their marriage in 1907, Art and Sus homesteaded near Froid, Montana, USA before Froid was incorporated. They lived in a sod house for the first two years, even in the winter, while improving the land and setting foundations. In the 1920s, they built a house in Froid and wintered in town. Art and Sus loved to travel and drove many thousands of miles visiting friends and family across the US and Canada. Art was a Montana state representative in the 1920s. Art and Sus raised their family in Froid, two sons and four daughters.
