Beal, 38, extensive wheat farmer residing northwest of Holyoke, and his younger son, Keith, 10 years old, met instant death about 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon when the small cabin airplane, owned and piloted by Mr. Beal, crashed to earth. Double funeral services for the crash victims will be held this afternoon in Holyoke. The final rites will be conducted at the First Methodist Church with the pastor, Rev. Clare J. Hayes, officiating. Rites for Mr. Beal will be under direction of the Elks Lodge of Sterling, of which he was a member. Interment of the two bodies will be made in the Holyoke cemetery. The crash followed an Easter Sunday pleasure flight for the Colorado rancher and his young son. After flying over Holyoke and surrounding community about 40 minutes, Beal, who held a private license, put the ship into a power dive. Witnesses to the crash said the plane was coming out of the power dive in perfect manner when a portion of the fabric ripped from the right wing, leaving Beal with very little control of the ship. The plane made two turns of a snap roll, immediately went into a spin, and nosed into the ground, landing upright. The plane crashed in a filed on the Joel Biddle farm about one and one half miles northwest of Holyoke. A few minutes prior to the crash, Beal had landed at the Holyoke landing field just north of town. Both bodies were badly mangled in the crash. Weather at Holyoke at the time of the accident was calm, although high winds had blown during the early part of the day. Witnesses to the crash hastened to the scene and removed the bodies from the plane. Investigation of the accident was made by Sheriff H.M. Clements, and examination of the bodies was conducted by Dr. H.C. Hill. Mr. Beal, son of Andrew Beal and the late Mary Hagemann Beal, was born May 8, 1902 at Juniata, Nebraska. He was baptized July 13, 1902 in the Lutheran faith. In later life, sensing the need of fellowship and brotherhood, an active membership was maintained by him in the Elks Lodge No. 1336 of Sterling and Logan Lodge No. 70 A.F. & A.M. of Julesburg. Mr. Beal first came to the Holyoke community with his father in the fall of 1916 to establish the family home, the family moving from Nebraska to make the permanent home in March 1917. Arthur Beal and Miss Hazel Whitaker were married in May 1926, at Haxtun. Always an aggressive farmer, Mr. Beal had engaged in successful farming for the most of his mature years, farming in partnership with H.E. Reichelt. In connection with his large-scale farming operations, Mr. Beal owned and operated a machine ship at his farm, doing custom work for farmers throughout northeastern Colorado. His business and farming interests were under his own capable management, and his children, motherless, were given the greatest of care. The deceased, who had been flying for the past three years, held a private license. Credited to him were 405 hours and 45 minutes of flying time. The small plane was the second owned by Beal. He gained much pleasure from his plane and flying, and had made numerous long trips by air. His plane was housed in a hangar at this farm place, near which he maintained his landing field. Mr. Beal was preceded in death by his wife November 4, 1932 and by his mother October 23, 1934. Surviving are his three children, Gloria, a student in the Julesburg high school, and Kenton and Lorna, pupils in a rural school; his fiancée, Miss Verna Weingartner, always an inspiration to him and his children; his father, Andrew Beal of Holyoke; six brothers, Elmer of Los Angeles, California, Lester of Chicago, Illinois; Kermit of Bayard, Nebraska, and Albert, LaVern and Oscar of Holyoke; four sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Rutt of Brighton, Mrs. Helen Condreay of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Mrs. Esther Finke and Miss Viola Beal of Holyoke; and many other relatives. Keith Gilbert Beal, the son who died in the crash, was born April 19, 1930, in Holyoke. He was baptized as a small child in the Lutheran faith. Keith was a sixth grade pupil in the Sunnydale rural school north of Holyoke, where he left an enviable record as a brilliant scholar. Following the death of his loving mother, his aunt, Mrs. Helen Condreay, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, accepted the care of the four Beal children. Beal And Son Double funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at the Methodist church for Arthur W. Beal and his son, Keith Gilbert, who were killed instantly Easter Sunday when the airplane owned and piloted by Mr. Beal crashed to the ground near Holyoke. Officers of the Sterling Lodge No. 1336, B.P.O. Elks, of which Mr. Beal was a member, and Rev. Clare J. Hayes, pastor of the Methodist church, conducted the double rites. In addition to the officers of the Sterling lodge, 30 members attended and participated in the service. A male quartet composed of Dr. P.S. Struble, G.L. Bereman, Walter G. Sprick and E.W. Hornish sang two numbers, "Remember Me," and "It's Morning Up There," with Mrs. Charles F. Brown playing the accompaniments. Burial was made in the Holyoke cemetery. Pallbearers for Arthur Beal were his six brothers, Albert, Oscar, LaVerne, Elmer, Lester and Kermit Beal. The pallbearers for Keith Beal were Myrle Foster, J.W. O'Neal and Russell J. Guild of Holyoke, Paul Johnson of Ovid and C.B. McCampbell and T.R. Robison of Julesburg. The funeral services were largely attended. Among the out-of-town relatives and friends attending were Elmer Beal of Los Angeles, California, Lester O.
