April 04, 1969) Arthur Wesley Underwood (son of Charles Fleming Underwood and Martha Ellen Rayburn) was born August 01, 1877 in Hillsboro OH, and died April 04, 1969 in Columbus OH. He married Anne Elizabeth Carroll on May 03, 1905 in Hillsboro OH, daughter of Michael Francis Carroll and Mary Louise Malone. Arthur W. Underwood is the only son of Charles F. and Martha Underwood. Born and Educated in Highland County Ohio near Hillsboro. He was commissioned a First Lieutenant in the United States Guards on 07-28-1918 during WW1. He was discharged on 12-14-1920, but continued to serve in the Ohio National Guard where he eventually attained the rank of Major. He was married in 1905 to Anne E. Carroll and owned and operated two small business in Hillsboro including a Shoe Store and a Grocery Store. He was a charter member of the American Legion and remained a member for the remainder of his life. He played coronet in the American Legion Band and with them, traveled to Paris France in 1927 for a concert. Arthur and Ann eventually moved from Hillsboro to Columbus where he was employed by the State of Ohio as an auditor. Although born into the Methodist religion of his family, Arthur converted to Catholicism later in life. His sponsor in Baptism was James McCaffrey who is my, (Bill Underwood) maternal grandfather. Grand-Pa as we grandchildren called him was kind and loving and always had time to spend with his grandchildren whenever we would visit.He lived 92 years and we thank the Lord for all of them.
