Underwood was born March 29, 1847 and died at his home in Hillsboro, Ohio, December 27, 1925 ages 78 years, 8 months and 28 days. He lived his entire life in Highland County. Few men were better or more favorably known than he or had more and truer friends. On the 26th day of July, 1870, he was united in marriage with Martha E. Rayburn who continues life's journey after a happy married life of over 55 years. One son, Arthur, of Columbus, Ohio and two daughters, Mrs. C. W. Summers on the farm which for so many years was the family homestead and Mrs. Byron R. Clark of Hillsboro, are the surviving children. Lella, wife of J. G. Bell, passed on several years ago, leaving two daughters, one of whom, Mrs. C. B. Moore is in Manila, P. I. and the other, Mrs. Rudolph Schaffer of Los Angeles, California. Mr. Underwood was an excellent type of citizenship. He always stood for the uplift and civic betterment of the community in which he lived,and could invariably be counted on to support of all moral issues. His fellowmen believed in him, and for many years, both in the country and after his removal to Hillsboro, served as Justice of the Peace. He was endowed by nature with an unfailing fund of common sense and honesty of purpose. So universal was the confidence of those who came before him in the Justice Court that it was seldom that any of his decisions were appealed from or carried to higher court. Squire Underwood as he was called by his associates, was a successful business man and when the warning came, was at his office actively engaged in his official duties. He died as he would have wanted it, in the active duties of life, surrounded by family and friends. He was a good neighbor and friend to many who will miss him. He was especially kind and considerate in all the family ties of life. He was a life-long member of the M. E. Church and was seldom absent from church services. He lived a consistent Christian life and has passed to his reward leaving a heritage rich in good deeds and helpful interest in his fellowmen.
