Artie was the second born of eleven other siblings other than herself: William F (1864-1946), Ira S (1869-1934), James Lewis (1870-1947), Clara Jane (1872-1961), Sabird B (1876-1955), Franklin Stephens (1878-1964), Bessie Betty Mabel (1879-1970), Silas Washington (1883-1947), Effie (1886-1912), Eva Violet (1886-1951) and Minnie I (1888-1971). Artie was the second born of eleven other siblings other than herself: William F (1864-1946), Ira S (1869-1934), James Lewis (1870-1947), Clara Jane (1872-1961), Sabird B (1876-1955), Franklin Stephens (1878-1964), Bessie Betty Mabel (1879-1970), Silas Washington (1883-1947), Effie (1886-1912), Eva Violet (1886-1951) and Minnie I (1888-1971). In 1870, age 4, she and her family lived on a farm in Sidney, Fremont County, Iowa where her father worked a farm worth $2000 with personal property worth $1500. In 1880, age 14, she and her family were still living on the same farm in Sidney On 12 Jan 1888, age 22, she married Robert Edward Burns (29 Jan 1865 to 22 Jan 1938) at the home of her parents near Steptoe Butte, Whitman County, Washington Territory. They homesteaded at the foot of Steptoe Butte and proved it up five years later and the land was awarded to Artie Mecie on 11 Nov 1893. It is on this homestead that Earnest Raymond (1888-1964), Perry Fountain (1890-1974), Jennie Francis (1891-1982, Lester Lorenzo (1892-1970), Millie Caroline (1894-1951), Robert Franklin (1896-1983) and Artie Beulah (1898-1976) were born. Wheat was the chief crop until a crop failure due to bad weather in 1893, and then prune trees were planted. Dried fruit became a main produce for the area. Successive crop failures lead to the loss of the farm and the family moved to a farm in Elberton where Bob made a living as a laborer. Vergil Devine (1901-1979) and Clara Belle (1903-1975) were born there. "In 1905 the family moved to Fall City, King County, Washington, located at the hub of the Snoqualmie Valley. Several of Mecie's brothers had already moved there. Daughter, Mary Pauline (1907-1988) as born there." Bob and son, Perry, cut shingle bolts and set up living quarters six miles to the west of town on the Redmond - Fall City Road along Patterson Creek. One of the first stores, The Snoqualmie Valley Cooperative, borrowed money from Bob and when business faltered, Bob took over the store in order to protect his investment in 1909 and renamed it, Burns and Sons, The One Price Store. In 1907, age 41, she and the family moved into Fall City and lived 3 blocks south of River Street on 4th & James (now 4360 336th Pl SE). In 1917, her sons, Lester, Perry & Frank went to war. After the war in 1919, her daughters, Artie, Millie & Clara were married to returning soldiers. In 1922, Bob closed the store and sold the building to his son in law, Jesse Kelley, who used it for his electrical shop. On 12 Jan 1938, Artie, age 71, and her husband Bob, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with five generations present including her mother Sarah Hume, age 92. On 22 Jan 1938, age 71, she became a widow when her husband Bob, died at age 72. He was buried at the Fall City Cemetery.
