Asa Drew, familiarly known to the people of Ashland and vicinity as Uncle Asa died at the residence of his son Asa Warren Drew on Highland Street, Thursday, October 2 at about one o'clock a.m. Deceased was the oldest male resident in town, having been born in Ashland, then Holderness, on March 22, 1812 and therefore 90 years, 6 months and 10 days old at the time of his death. He was practically a life resident of this place always living in his native town with the exception of five years spent in the west. He was an honest, upright, conscientious man of strict integrity, and enjoyed the confidence and respect of all who became acquainted with him. He was a total abstainer from tobacco in all its form and no profanity ever escaped his lips. He was always a hard working man, ever ready to assist as far as he was able, and would oftentimes subject himself to inconveniences to be of service to others. He retained his faculties in a remarkable degree until January last, when having a shock he began to fail and gradually grew lower until the end came. He was of a long lived family, his mother reaching the age of 97 years and six months, and died in Ashland in 1871. His wife Nancy died in Ashland in 1890. He was the father of a large family of children four of whom are now living, Asa Warren Drew, a lawyer of Ashland; Nathaniel Drew now living in Dummerston, Vt. and two daughters, Mrs. Jennie chase and Mrs. George E. Watson, now residing in Fitchburg, Mass., who deeply mourn his departure. The Ashland Citizen, October 4, 1902, p5.
