Description	:	Athen Ritter "Rit" Headley changed his name to "George" when he moved to California in 1944. He took the name of his younger brother George Headley, born 18 Aug 1889, who died of Lock-jaw after falling out of a tree and breaking both wrists, and/or his leg at age ten, in 1899. Athen's father George Washington Headlee rode with Buffalo Bill's Wild-West-Show that wintered across the river from Council Bluffs, Iowa, so his father was gone from home often. Athen Ritter and his siblings held barn dances Saturday nights for a fee of ten cents per person. He loved to tell jokes and make people laugh. He was very out-going and enjoyed life. The entire family was musical, with each playing a different instrument, and entertainig people with song and stories, so changing his name when he moved to California was not such a major change in his life. A younger brother, Clyde Headley, also changed his surname to Hadley, which is on his marriage certificate, and used that name with seven of his nine children. Since Clyde's name was changed by choice, Clyde had to change back from Hadley to Headley when he started drawing social security. But Athen Ritter Headley died as George Hadley. Athen Ritter's older sister Nora Headley Bendon's grandson is the famous Irish Tennor Gene Pursell on the Lawrence Welk Show in the early days.
