Description	:	Audrey Anna Mellenbruch Reynolds Heiniger, 97, of Fairview died June 1, 2001, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital, Hiawatha, Kansas. Audrey was born April 25 1904, to C.F. (Fred) and Myrta (Johnson)Mellenbruch in rural Hiawatha, Kansas. She attended elementary grades at the Mulberry Country Grade School. Following graduation from Fairview High School in 1921, she taught one year at Mt. Roy School near Robinson and helped her aunt cook for a sixteen-man threshing crew in the summers. Read More	Audrey Anna Mellenbruch Reynolds Heiniger, 97, of Fairview died June 1, 2001, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital, Hiawatha, Kansas. Audrey was born April 25 1904, to C.F. (Fred) and Myrta (Johnson)Mellenbruch in rural Hiawatha, Kansas. She attended elementary grades at the Mulberry Country Grade School. Following graduation from Fairview High School in 1921, she taught one year at Mt. Roy School near Robinson and helped her aunt cook for a sixteen-man threshing crew in the summers. Audrey married Ted Reynolds in 1922, and they had eight children. They lived in various locations in northeast Kansas until moving to a home in Fairview where she resided for fifty-seven years. Her husband Ted died in 1961. In 1980 she married William Heiniger who died in 1993. She worked at the Fairview Post Office for twenty-eight years, retiring at the age of 68 upon which she remarked, "old postal clerks never die: they just get cancellec!" In addition to her work at the post office she was bookkeeper for the Fairview Locker Plant and the Fairview Sewer Department and was also a travel agent for a time. Following her retirement, Audrey devoted many hours in service to others and volunteer work. With tenderness she assisted in area nursing homes. With compassion and patience she volunteered as a teacher's aide at the Kickapoo Nation School. With pride she was selected by Representative Martha Keyes to represent senior citizens in Washington D.C. and served on the Northeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging Board. Never idle, Audrey recently started knitting sweaters for needy children abroad, completing her last one in April before she died. While working at the post office she started taking bus trips to nearby states and eventually traveled to all fifty states and all continents except Asia and Antarctica.
