Description	:	Audrey Menzel, 89, Pierre, formerly of De Smet, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare in Pierre. Services have been set for 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, at the United Church of Christ in Lake Preston with the Rev. Donald Schumacher officiating. Burial will follow at the Lake Preston Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, at Osthus Funeral Home in De Smet. Audrey Isabel Bentley was born Jan. 29, 1912, to Guttorm and Elizabeth (Setbacken) Bentley at Lake Preston. She lived in Midland until her father died in 1918, then moved back to Lake Preston where she completed her education, graduating from Lake Preston High School. Audrey married Donald Menzel on Feb. 2, 1932, at Salem. The couple farmed in the Erwin area for many years. Audrey always had a big vegetable garden and enjoyed a beautiful flower garden. She was a wonderful cook and homemaker. In 1962 Audrey and Donald moved into De Smet. She was employed at the Kingsbury County register of deeds office and served as deputy register of deeds for 20 years, retiring in 1982. Donald died in 1999, and Audrey continued to live in De Smet until January 2001 when she entered Beverly Healthcare in Pierre. She is survived by one son, Dean Menzel and wife Delores of Erwin; one daughter, Maxine Johnston and husband Dennis of Pierre; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Maxine Carlson of Lake Preston and Dorothy Kraus and husband Clarence of Fort Myers, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two brothers.
