A memorial service was Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary of First Reformed Church of Sioux Center with the Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating. Interment was in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center. Mrs. Groen was born September 25, 1934, on the family farm near Maurice, the daughter of Henry and Wilhemina (Vande Berg) Punt. She attended Center #6 rural school and graduated from. Sioux Center High School in 1951. She married Lawrence Groen on October 29, 1952. They lived in Tokyo, Japan, for one year while he served in the U.S. Army. After returning to the States, they farmed west of Sioux Center for 31 years. For the last 20 years, they have resided in Sioux Center. She was a lifelong member of First Reformed Church of Sioux Center where she was very active as a Sunday school and catechism teacher, an RCYF sponsor and a member of Women's Bible Study. Her godly example encouraged all who knew her. She was also instrumental in Farm Bureau, the 4-H program and in instructing piano and organ students. She was an avid sports and music fan following her children's and grandchildren's activities. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and sewing. She was known for creating artistic, personal greeting cards for so many acquaintances. Gardening and flower arranging gave her joy. Survivors are her husband, Lawrence; four children, Mary Boote of Des Moines, Ruth and Tim Van Der Weide of Orange City, Dr. David and Amy Groen of West Des Moines, and Lois and Steve Willis of Overland Park, Kansas; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; brothers and a sister, Donald and Alvina Punt of Sioux Center, Loyd and Gracia Punt of Pipestone, Minnesota, Leroy and Joan Punt of Maurice, Dorothy and Curtis Van Briessen of Sioux Center; and sister-in-law, Arlene Punt Bidwell of Sioux Center. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Punt and Henry Punt. The Groen Family prefers memorials to ATLAS of Sioux Center or CHEARS Home Health & Hospice of Sioux Center.
