He lived on the homestead with his parents and a sister, Eva. August farmed his father's 150 acres with horses. He used to work for John Reminus hauling eggs and cream into Heil with his 1928 Chevrolet. August and Elzira Lovell met in 1941. She was teaching school in the Heart River School District and boarded with his father. August and Elzira were married in fall 1942, and in 1946 they took over the Bentz family farm. He purchased his first tractor in 1940, farmed 554 acres, ran fifty range cattle, 150 chickens farrowed about fifteen sows and fed almost 100 hogs. The couple had five children, Roger born July 13, 1943, served in Vietnam for two years, married Donna Well, they lived in Cambria, California, with their two children; Vernon Lee born July 03, 1944, passed away at two months and ten days; Ira born November 19, 1946, served in Japan and Guam, married Margie McDowell, lived in Mandan, North Dakota, with their two children; Darla born November 24, 1950, died in a vehicle accident, married James Miller from Hebron, North Dakota, they had a son; Darvin born November 21, 1951, married Robin Meidinger, lived at Elkhorn, Nebraska, with their son.
