FUNERAL BEING HELD TODAY Deceased Came to Crawford Country in 1871 and Settled in Hanover Township---Retired in 1906 SCHLESWIG, Jan 10 (Special to the Review) August Schultz, pioneer resident of Hanover Township, and for several years a resident of this place, passed away at his home hear at 2:20 o'clock Monday morning after an illness of but a few hours of duration due to heart trouble. The news of his death cast a deep gloom over the entire community as Mr. Schultz had apparently been in the best of health, being up town every day. Sunday evening he visited the home of his nephew Albert Schultz and seemed in the best of health until 10:00 o'clock, when he started for home when he suffered his first attack. He was carried to his home and a physician was called. Mr. Schultz seemed to rally from the first attack, but later suffered another and passed away peacefully at 2:20 o'clock. August Schultz was born in the year 1845 at Zahkof, Prussia, Germany. He came to America at the age of eight years locating in Chicago. When a young man, he engaged in the manufacture of furniture, and was most successful in his chosen line of work. His business grew to such magnitude that he erected a factory and employed a number of men. In the great fire in 1871, his business was destroyed but he rebuilt, only to have this building destroyed by fire a few years later. It was in 1871 Mr. Schultz came to Crawford Country and settled in Hanover Township to engage in farming and stock raising. As a farmer and stock raiser, he was most successful and as the years went by he accumulated considerable wealth and from time to time added to his land holdings. In 1906 he retired from the farm and moved to Schleswig to make his future home and enjoy the fruits of his labor among his old friends. Mr. Schultz was married in Chicago in 1867 to Miss Hattie Fink and to this union were born fourteen children, twelve of whom survive, one child dying in infancy and one son Frank, passing away two years ago. The surviving children are Herman F., Hanover Township; Mrs Emma Rasch, Fort Dodge; Mrs Ida Ebert, Hanover Township; Otto, Charter Oak; Dr. W. H., Schleswig; Carl, Hanover Township; Lewis, Morgan Township; Mrs. George Hargins, Morgan Township; August F., Schleswig; Mrs. Adelheid Wiegand, Schleswig; Mrs. Minnie Martins, Manning; and Earnest, Soldier Township. In addition he leaves sixty five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Henry Witt, living at Chicago. His wife departed this life on July 20, 1913. In the death of Mr. Schultz, Crawford County loses one of its important citizens and one who was closely identified with the development of the community. Coming here when western Iowa was an unbroken prairie country, he was not slow in seeing its possibilities as an agricultural community and he made every effort toward its development. He did not confine his efforts to agriculture but actively engaged in the raising and feeding of stock and was considered an expert in this type of endeavor. Mr. Schultz was active in every movement for the development of community, county and state in which he resided for so many years. For two terms he served on the board of supervisors a position he filled with much credit to himself. He was elected to the Iowa General Assembly serving as the member from this county for the 24th and 25th General Assemblies. Mr. Schultz for a number of years was a successful bridge constructor and assisted the late Morris McHenry in surveying the roads in the northwestern part of the county. After removing to Schleswig for several years he held the office of mayor of the town. For twenty seven years he was president of the German Mutual Insurance Company. Mr. Schultz was a substantial citizen and one whose influence was always for the improvement and welfare of the community. His career was an active one and his honorable business methods coupled with his energy won him an enviable place in the community. Mr. Schultz was active in the affairs of his community and he was known to be a man of good judgment and one who was never afraid to take a stand in his convictions. In his death, Schleswig, and in fact the entire community, loses one of its best citizens. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock at the Emanuel Lutheran Church pastor Rev. Firnhalier officiating after which the remains will be taken to Hanover Township Lutheran Church where services will be conducted by Rev Runge who was Mr. Schultz's first pastor.
