Mr. Holcombe was born in Union on Aug. 17, 1936, a son of the late Samuel Ratchford Holcombe and Irene Fowler Holcombe. He had been working in the family business, the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home, since it opened in 1949. He graduated from Union High School in 1954 and from Cincinnati College of Funeral services in June 1955. Having passed the national board exams, he took the state board tests and became the youngest embalmer and funeral director in the state at that time. Mr. Holcombe was retired from the South Carolina National Guard, Union Unit, after more than 35 years of service. He held the rank of E-7, sergeant first class, upon his retirement. He was a member of the South Carolina Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association. He was a member of Union First Baptist Church, the Elks Lodge and was a Mason and a Shriner. Surviving in addition to his wife, two daughters and son-in-law, Audrea Holcombe Douglass and husband, Charles R. Douglass Jr., and Sammi Lynne Holcombe Haire and her husband, William V. Haire; two sisters, Gladys Holcombe Genoble of Union and Faye Holcombe Williamson of Whitmire; a brother, Billy Eugene Holcombe of Union; five grandchildren, Stephen Ratchford Kurtz, Ashley Margaret Kurtz, Justin Dwight Kurtz, Claire Elizabeth Douglass and August Dillon Haire all of Union; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Jerry Lawson, the Rev. Melvin Hudson, the Rev. Carl Harris and the Rev. Gary Farmer. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 5-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. The family is at the home, 310 West South St. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements. ****************** Funeral Director August Holcombe died Saturday at his Union residence. His death shocked the state's funeral industry, which lost a good friend, colleagues said. Holcombe, 64, became the youngest embalmer and funeral director in the state in 1955. He had worked in his family's business, the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home, since he was 12 years old. "August was very down to earth, but all business when he had to be," Glenn Miller said. Miller, general manager of the J.F. Floyd's Mortuary, is secretary of the state Funeral Director's Association. Tom Rampey, funeral director of Wood Mortuary, is president of the group. Miller and Rampey were with Holcombe at the annual meeting of funeral directors in Columbia earlier in the week. "August was a good friend. I sat with him two nights, Monday and Tuesday, just chit chatting, socializing. Talked to him again Wednesday, also," Miller said. Holcombe had not been sick and apparently died in his sleep. "He and his family contributed greatly to the Union community as well as being excellent care givers in the profession," Miller said. Rampey, who went to high school in Union County, said the Holcombes handled his father's funeral several years ago. "It made me feel good knowing August and his brother, Billy, were there for us," he said. Rampey said Holcombe could make anybody feel comfortable and at home - like he or she was the most important person in the world. Holcombe was at ease, whether working a funeral or on the farm, he said. "August always smiled. I never heard him say anything bad about anybody. There will be a lot of people in Union Sunday and Monday for him and his family," he said. The family will receive friends today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Holcombe funeral home. Services will be Monday at 3 p.m. Burial will follow in Union Memorial Gardens.
