Harder passed away at his home here Thursday evening, after several months illness, at the age of 77. He was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, on January 17, 1867, and came to this country with his parents at the age of nine. They settled on a farm near Artois. He later took up carpentry and helped to build up what was then Germantown. He helped build the Artois Lutheran church and was a charter member of the congregation which was organized here, and a loyal supporter of the church up to the time of his death. When the German town Rochdale store was organized in 1903, he was appointed first secretary and worked with them until the business was discontinued, after which he and his son Harry opened a garage and filling station, which they operated until a year ago, when conditions forced them to close shop. For 20 years he served as justice of the peace here. On October 25, 1893 he was married to Miss Katherine Mordhorst. To them two sons were born. One died in infancy. The surviving son, Harry, makes his home in Artois. Mr. and Mrs. Harder celebrated their Golden Anniversary last October. Funeral services for Mr. Harder were held at the Artois Lutheran church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. F. Matthias. The church was filled with friends and relatives who came to pay their last respects to a man who had been a civic leader and helped to build up the town of Artois. He is survived by his wife, one son Harry, a daughter-in-law, who so faithfully helped to care for him during his long illness, three grandchildren, Sgt. Harry Elwood Harder, stationed at Albuquerque, N.M., and Wesley and Laura Jean Harder. Three sisters also survive, Mrs. Bertha Michael, Willows, Mrs. Helene Hamann, Orland, and Mrs. C. J. Witbeck, Glenn. Pall bearers were A. O. Pieper, Gus Lohse, Ernest Michael, Phil Vehalage, J. F. Moelk and Herman Michael. - Transcribed by E.
