The aged man was unable to recuperate from the shock of a stroke suffered earlier in the week. He was 83 years of age. Services for the deceased were held Tuesday morning at the home at Willows and interment was in the Artois cemetery. Rev. Mr. Matthias, Lutheran pastor of Artois, officiated. A large concourse of relatives and friends joined the procession to Artois. Harder was born in Holstein, Germany, on March 23, 1643. He grew up on the farm of his father, spent 2 ½ years in the German army, and served for 11 months, in 1871, in the Franco-Prussian war. While in Germany he was married to Frl. Madeline Heintz. In 1874 Harder emigrated to the United States, coming direct to Germantown, now Artois, to which place his brother, Theodore, had preceded him. The next year his wife and 3 children joined him. Later, when somewhat independent, he bought a half section of railroad land south of Artois, and for many years farmed the same to grain. He was prosperous from the beginning. His father joined him at Artois and lived on the ranch until he died, at the age of 95. In 1913 Harder sold his ranch and came to Willows, where he built a bungalow home and lived in retirement to the time of his death. In June 1914, Harder's wife died. She was highly esteemed in the community and particularly in the circles of the Lutheran church of Artois, of which they both were members. The following children survive: Mrs. Lena Hamann of Orland, Mrs. C. J. Witbeck of Willows, Miss Emma Harder of Willows, Mrs. Dora Pieper of Willows, Mrs. Henry Michael and August Harder. - Transcribed by E.
