In both the 1925 and 1930 censuses, Gus indicated that he had been born in Iowa, but this is believed to be incorrect. Gus appears as August Curran in the 1900 census for Iowa. He reported that was born in New York in Sept. 1880 and he did not know the birth locations of his parents. He was living with G. A. (George Albert) and Lizzie Baron (aka Barron) family in East Waterloo, Black Hawk, IA and working as a servant and farm laborer. He also appears in the 1895 IA census as 16-yr-old August Curran, born in New York and living in what appears to read East Waterloo, IA. Both of these censuses indicate an 1880 birth date, but his headstone date (supplied by Hattie?) and both the 1925 and 1930 censuses indicate his birth year (supplied by Gus?) as 1886. His Linn County death record shows his birth as 12 Jan 1886. The 1880 census shows a 20-year-old single Irish immigrant named Martin Curran living in New York City. This is quite possibly Gus' father. Gus married Hattie (Cordell) Mitchell on September 10, 1920, in Marion, Linn County, Iowa. Hattie's maiden name is shown incorrectly as "Fordell" in the on-line marriage record. Hattie's parents were shown as John and Malinda (Lemonds) Cordell. Her mother was Melinda (Lemon) Cordell. Gus and Hattie were living in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in the 1925 and 1930 Census records. Also living with them in 1925 was "Malinda Limo," who is shown as Gus' mother. In looking at the actual census record, Malinda's last name is Lines, and it has been transcribed incorrectly. Malinda was Hattie's mother (not Gus'), who married Wesley F. Lines on December 12, 1883, in Butler County, Iowa. The Curran grave marker for Gus & Hattie shows his name simply as "Husband Gus" and dates that read 1886-1936. It also shows "Wife Hattie" with an incorrect birth year of 1883 (1873 is correct) and an incomplete death date of "19." When she died, it appears that Hattie had no family to finish her death date. Malinda (Lemon) Lines is buried in the Shiloh Cemetery.
