On 4 Dec 1894, 21-yr-old Hattie married her neighbor, 32-yr-old Frank James Stace (b.Aug 1862 IL) in Independence, IA. Hattie divorced Frank on 22 Feb 1900. Only 33 days later (26 Mar 1900) and 120 miles away, 27-yr-old Hattie married 59-yr-old John Dorrance Clouse (b.17 Dec 1840 PA) in Wappello Cty, IA. According to Pearl Elizabeth Pickering, Hattie & John were her biological parents as she was born on 28 Feb 1901 in Ottumwa, Wapello, IA. Her parents divorced about 11 months after Pearl's birth and 61-yr-old John died 10 months after the divorce. Review of Hattie's six marriages strongly suggests that she did not want children and Pearl was put up for adoption. Pearl was not with John & Hattie during the summer of 1901 after they traveled to Waterloo by covered wagon. Pearl was adopted and raised by the Alfred Osterson (#98823418) family in Roelyn, Webster, IA. Pearl had been told that her mother had died during Pearl's birth. Pearl's most recent Birth Certificate was issued in Callender, Webster, IA to Alfred & Augusta Osterson. Augusta died in 1905 (when Pearl was 4) and Pearl was raised by Alfred & his second wife, Violet Osterson. Hattie divorced John in Waterloo, IA during Jan 1902 and 32-yr-old Hattie married 52-yr-old Edward A. Peterson on 2 Jul 1906 in Independence, IA. Edward had been born Jul 1854 in the Washington Twsp of Black Hawk Cty, IA to Frederick S. (b. 1808 Germany) and Matilda (b. 1832 Germany) Peterson. Hattie divorced Edward on May 5, 1911 in Waterloo and 38-yr-old Hattie married 48-yr-old Ruel Martindale Mitchell (b.17 Jan 1863 IA) on 25 Jul 1912 in Waterloo, IA. Ruel died after a long illness on 22 Aug 1915 in Buchanan Cty, IA and 46-yr-old Hattie married 24-yr-old August (Gus) Curran (b. 12 Jan 1886 NY) on 10 Sep 1920 in Marion, IA. Gus died in 1936 in Linn Cty, IA and 62-yr-old Hattie married 53-yr-old Jesse (Jeff?) Amasa Cassidy (b.14 Jul 1883 IA) on 15 Nov 1936 in Linn Cty, IA. Jesse died in 1942 in Linn Cty, IA. Hattie & Jesse appear living together in the 1941 City Directory for Cedar Rapids, Linn, IA. Nothing has been found to suggest Hattie had any children (other than Pearl) Hattie was 71 when she died. She was buried in the Shiloh Cemetery with her fifth husband, Gus Curran, to whom she was married for over 15 years. Their grave marker incorrectly shows her birth date as 1883 and her death date was not entered. She had no family to finish her grave marker. She may have outlived all six of her husbands. Her mother, Melinda Lines, is also buried there. Hattie's death certificate (DC) was located by Debbie Truitt (47746502). This displays information that disagrees from what is presented above, including census records. The DC information may have been reported by questionable sources. What is clear is that she died on 25 April of chronic myocarditis after a 35-day stay in an Independence, IA hospital. The DC notes that her body was removed on 26 April to a "place of burial or cremation" located in Iowa City, IA. There are FaG entries for John Cordell, Melinda, Pearl, Frank, John Clouse, Ruel, August, Jesse and the three adult Ostersons, but not for Edward A. Peterson.
