WAS MEMBER OF KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS AND ODD FELLOWS. August Henning, pioneer settler of Glenn County and Willows and one of its most respected citizens, passed away quietly this morning while asleep. Although for some time past in failing health the end came as a great shock to his relatives and friends, Mr. Henning being about town yesterday feeling apparently much the same as usual. Heart failure is given as the cause of his death. Mr. Henning was born in Germany in 1850 and came to this country when he was 20 years of age, reaching California in 1872 where he was the first employed on Zumwalt's ranch. Two years later he leased 240 acres of what is now East Willows and began raising wheat in partnership with his brother, Henry. Meeting with success in this venture, he steadily increased his farming operations, finally buying a large tract along the river. He later engaged in business in Willows but retired several years ago. Mr. Henning's first wife died in 1882, leaving two children, Walter and Mrs. Laura Duncan. In 1887 he was married to Miss Ellen McCallum and to them were born two daughters Gussie and Vernell, the former being the wife of Dr. L.E. Tuttle and the latter Mrs. William Dean. Mr. Henning was a member of the Knights of Pythias and of the Odd Fellows and during his long residence in this community has been known for his good citizenship, integrity, and upright character.
