Wagner, 87-year-old Merrick county farmer, died in Hord Memorial hospital Friday from burns suffered in an accident Wednesday on his farm a few miles northwest of Central City. Mr. Wagner reportedly was standing near a tractor which was being started by his son, Heber, when fire shot from the tractor and set his clothes afire. He suffered extensive burns over most of his body except the legs and was taken to the Hord hospital immediately. The son, attempting to put out the flames, suffered burns on arm and hands in the effort. A resident of the Central City locality for 43 years, Mr. Wagner was born in Wisconsin June 29, 1869, the son of Claus and Johanna Wagner. On May 24, 1894, he was married to Hanna Siercks at Fremont. Following their marriage they resided near Fremont for 13 years, then moved to Colorado where they lived for four years, after which they returned to Merrick county where they have since resided. Mr. and Mrs. Wagner were privileged to celebrate their 62nd wedding anniversary on May 24, 1956. He is survived by his wife, four sons, Clause and Heber of Central City; Glenn of the U.S. navy who was unable to attend the services because of military commitments; Roy of Aurora; five daughters, Mrs. Silda Stelk, Grand Island; Mrs. Mildred McIntosh, North Platte; Mrs. Clara Summervill[e], Omaha; Mrs. Irma White, Kalona, Ia., and Mrs. Frances Hanna, Emmitt, Ida.; one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Beaty [Bentz], Norfolk; 34 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren and other more distant relatives. Mr. Wagner was preceded in passing by four daughters, three of them in infancy; one son and both of his parents. Funeral services were held in the Solt Chapel Monday, July 9, with Rev. W.O. Samuelson in charge. Selected organ music was provided by Mrs. Elgin O. White. Flowerbearers were Francis Barth, Alice Butt, Evelyn Dickman, Betty Green, Lois Kirschner and Barbara Mortenson. Pallbearers were Leon Barth, Richard Butt, Harlan Green, Dick Mortenson, Bill Powers, Gale Wagner. Interment was in the Central City cemetery.
