Description	:	August K. Fitzner, 68, of Emmetsburg, died Monday, June 30, 1997, from injuries he sustained in an automobile accident on Interstate 29 near Sioux City. State Patrol investigators reports that Mr. Fitzner had switched drivers, putting Evelyn behind the wheel. She was driving in the right-hand, southbound lane of I-29, near the Sergeant Bluff mile marker, when she unexpectedly stopped the car according to witnesses. The semi-truck following behind was unable to avoid hitting the car from the rear. August Fitzner died at the scene and Raffy San Jose was air-lifted to Marian Health Center in Sioux City, where he later died. Evelyn Fitzner and Rowena San Jose were taken by ambulance to Marian Health Center, Sioux City, where Evelyn Fitzner died that night. Rowena San Jose was expected to be released in a few days. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 3, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg, with The Rev. Dennis Angland officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg, Iowa. Martin-Mattice Funeral Home, Emmetsburg, is in charge of the arrangements. August Karl Fitzner was born March 14, 1929, in Webster County, the son of Herman and Hulda (Hansch) Fitzner. He graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1947. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Hazel Lynette (Frisbie) Dickinson on November 24, 1957, and were later divorced. He married Darlene Delores (Henderson) Duhn on October 17, 1981, in Emmetsburg. Darlene preceded him in death on May 19, 1996. He married Evelyn Copeland on March 15, 1997. She died July 2, 1997, as a result of injuries she sustained in the same automobile accident along with her son. He was employed as a type setter in Fort Dodge and later became employed at Eaton Corporation in Spencer. He was a member of the Eagles Club in Spencer. Surviving are three sons, Greg Fitzner, Terry Fitzner and Charm Fitzner, all of Des Moines; one step-daughter, Rowena San Jose of Emmetsburg; six grandchildren; one sister, Helen Schoenfisch of Fort Dodge; one sister-in-law, Hazel Fitzner of Fort Dodge and one brother, Harold (Betty) Fitzner of Boulder, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first two wives, one step-son, Raffy San Jose, five brothers, Stephen, Herman, Otto, Reinhart and Anton Fitzner and one brother-in-law, Karl Schoenfisch. Emmetsburg Reporter, July 3, 1997 Evelyn Fitzner was apparently just learning to drive, when she unexpectedly stopped the car she was driving on Interstate 29, and was rear-ended by a semi-truck, killing her husband, her son and herself. Her daughter, Rowena San Jose, 14, remains hospitalized in good condition after the collision. Evelyn Fitzer, 51, was a Filipino immigrant, who had just gotten her driving instruction permit six days before the accident. Evelyn's two children, Rowena and Raffy San Jose were in the rear seat. The family were on their way to the Immigration and Naturalization Service office in Omaha, Nebraska, to have her documents changed to her new name. The couple were just married in March.
